WishianThis thread is about exactly what the title says. What are your favorites? What are you watching/reading right now? What genres do you tend to like?
So for my favorites…
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (I loved the pacing, I loved the characters, I loved the soundtrack, I loved the with designs. All in all a wild ride I thoroughly enjoyed.)
Serial Experiments Lain (Lovely and surreal, strikes a chord with me because of its themes of internet identity vs 'real life' etc.)
Mushi-shi (So so so relaxing. It gives me the feeling I get after a walk in the forest.)
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (especially Part 4, Josuke is easily my favorite character in the series and reading it always brings back so many happy memories of getting into shenanigans with my friends. Also the series makes me surprisingly emotional for something so goofy.)
Shinsekai Yori (This one isn't especially well known but I really recommend it if you haven't seen it. There's some really interesting world building and it explores grey morality very nicely.)I'm currently watching Rose of Versailles. I've only seen the first two episodes so it's hard for me to judge but I'm liking it so far.
As for stuff I usually like… I like darker themes in more mystical, fantasy style settings. I mean I do love goofy romps like Jojo and KLK but things like Shinsekai tend to be what makes it into my top favorites.

Wishianhell yeah weeb time
my favorite anime for the past nearly 11 years has been Detective Conan. there's plenty you can complain about but i just love it. i love the characters and it's so much fun and i literally never get tired of rewatching old episodes.
my favorite as far as… not nearly 800 episodes anime goes is Hourou Musuko/Wandering Son. it's so cute and precious. i want to finish reading the manga at some point.
also i'm big sports anime trash. i love Ookiku Furikabutte a whole lot and also Free!, Kuroko no Basuke and Haikyuu!! lol
some other ones are Angel Beats!, Death Note, Madoka, Psycho-Pass, Steins;Gate and Tsuritama
in general even outside of anime stuff i tend to really like mystery/investigative/conspiracy type stuff so detective conan's main plot and steins;gate are kind of my aesthetic
also Serial Experiments Lain has been burning a hole in my harddrive for over a year and i had tried to watch it once in like 2010/11 or something but never got very far because i just kept being like “it's not the right time” gosh

Oh god how could I forget about Death Note. I adore Death Note, and it's how I met my bff. (Well, one of my bffs. My heart is large.)
I loved Tsuritama, too. It was such a pleasant mix of down to earth and otherworldly stuff. Really, really liked Psycho Pass, too. Akane's one of my favorite protagonists of all time.

WishianI've sorta been slacking on my animu watching lately…I blame my extremely fickle attention span. But I'm still weeb trash all the same.
My absolute favorite is the Evangelion series (including Rebuild), it means a lot to me and I could probably talk about why for days. Kaworu is my favorite fictional character of all time and Shinji's close behind. End of Evangelion is probably my favorite film. Evangelion everything is my favorite everything.
I also have a special place in my heart for the To Aru/Raildex franchise, which includes anime, manga, and light novels. I'm mostly into the Index light novels but I've fallen behind on them. I just really love the worldbuilding and the characters are great and I just have so much fun being immersed in the world of Raildex. Science side 4life.
And of course there's Death Note, which got me into anime and manga back when I was an elitist know-it-all who thought western cartoons and comics were universally better. You never forget your first. I've been meaning to reread the manga for a while and I have no doubt it'll stay one of my favorites. Also, I still love Mello. I will ALWAYS love Mello.

I think my favourite anime of all time is madoka, even though I've really only watched it once. It was just so amazing, and completely drew me in. I haven't watched rebellion yet though. I need to
I just finished the first season of Owari no Seraph, which was an absolutely fantastic anime. I also picked up the first book while I was in Japan, but bc my japanese is so shit I'm having some trouble reading it.
I also have a really special place in my heart for SAO, just because it was the first anime other than pretty cure that I got into. SnK as well.I'm like TZ, with my favourite anime being more scifi/fantasy with darker settings. I've watched lighter ones, but they generally don't interest me as much as the fantasy ones do.

WishianI've been watching like… one anime a year recently, but Back In The Day (when I read/watched tv more in general) I had a real list:
– Rurouni Kenshin was my fave (all of the manga, first season of the anime)
– Busou Renkin (manga and anime)
– Wolf's Rain (+ manga adaptation)
– a long long time ago I watched Evangelion (none of the movies I don't think), Trigun, and the original FMA, but I barely remember most of them
– Madoka Magica I watched only a year or two ago actually
– and of course bits of things like Inuyasha and Bleach and Naruto that used to be on tv, but I didn't seriously keep up with them
– also for manga-only, I collected all of +Anima years ago, again don't remember a lot of it
– and I used to follow Kaze Hikaru but they've gotten so difficult to find I don't know if I'll ever finish itI really need to rewatch/reread a lot of this stuff (Wolf's Rain and Busou Renkin especially) and watch Brotherhood someday but I'm terrible at starting things
the only thing I've been into recently is Noragami… I watched it over the course of several months last fall, then picked up a manga volume a month ago just for kicks and got sucked in because it's so much more detailed than the anime. I'm probably going to look for the rest of the volumes as they come out so hopefully I'll be relatively caught up when the second season airs (it focuses on my favorite characters this time!!)
other than that, most of what I follow nowadays is video game adaptations. a lot of the big Tales Of games get a short manga series or OVA, and Tales of the Abyss even got a full 26ep anime. unfortunately the anime generally get only subs, and the manga haven't been localized at all, so they're kind of hard to find…

WishianJojo's Bizarre Adventure (especially Part 4, Josuke is easily my favorite character in the series and reading it always brings back so many happy memories of getting into shenanigans with my friends. Also the series makes me surprisingly emotional for something so goofy.)
Part 4 is one of my favourites too, but I slightly prefer Part 7. Both the art and Johnny's character development are just amazing.Puella Magi Madoka Magica (I loved the pacing, I loved the characters, I loved the soundtrack, I loved the with designs. All in all a wild ride I thoroughly enjoyed.)
Seconding this too. I could just ramble on about all the things I love about Madoka, but I don't want to bore people.
Outside of those, I would have to say that my favourite anime is Welcome to the NHK because I can relate to the main character to an embarrassing degree (see: my avatar), and it's just a really funny and really depressing series that means a lot to me. I also love everything Satoshi Kon ever directed, especially Paranoia Agent. Oh, and Spice and Wolf.
Other than JoJo, the only long-running manga I read are Hunter x Hunter (I'm actually watching the 2011 anime right now) and Berserk.

KAGEPRO MY HOME. i own all the original kagepro songs, the first english manga + light novel volumes, the dvd that was released last year… i was even going to use a kido or shintaro icon here at first, but nothing was working how i wanted it to.
that said, i'm currently collecting the kagerou project light novels as they release and am finally reading them. and the manga as well (though i've already read some 20+ chapters that've been released online).
and if my icon doesn't give it away, steins;gate is my favorite series (good aesthetics, moss). i have yet to actually play its visual novel…
tsuritama is another good one! kuroko no basuke and haikyuu too, and i've been wanting to rewatch busou renkin for some time. and i've been meaning to also watch nge.i've watched a ton more animes that i'll probably know if they're mentioned, but those are the main ones that stick out to me right now or that i consider favorites.

right? honestly i was really into it even by the first episode, because i could instantly feel the atmosphere of the whole thing. i connected very closely with makise right away. it bugged me to hear everyone saying the first half was boring in comments i see about it when that's literally the build-up to the points that got “””mysterious”””, and also what's supposed to get you to know the characters. and the mysterious things happened first as soon as the crowd disappeared in episode one anyway lmao. unless you're observant, then they happened even before that!
also agreed with rukako
mostly gross, but you could at least tell what they wanted to be in the end i guess.
i forgot a series earlier, also: kimi to boku. please watch kimi to boku it's so peaceful (like tsuritama is, but without real plots) and i love it.

WishianMy favorites are Spice and Wolf and Fullmetal Alchemist (both original and Brotherhood), and Death Note is also pretty high up there.
I've been watching a lot more since picking up Netflix; also the library in the town I moved to has quite a respectable-sized manga section (two actually – a YA section and an adult section) so I can start reading more. I just read volume 1 of Claymore.
Currently I'm watching Naruto; I'm about at the point I once read up to in the manga (the chunin exams) and farther than I'd previously gotten in the anime. Also Pokemon; I'd watched up to Johto Journeys when I was a kid and am now re-watching, in order, as they become available on the Pokemon site.

Highway Star is also right at the top of my list of things I want to see done with really high quality animation. Especially the part where Josuke flips over the baby carriage.
Other Part 4 things I really want to see animated are Tonio, the Sheer Heart Attack fight (I really like Kira and Koichi so I got incredibly hyped multiple times while reading those chapters), and everything with Mikitaka. Honestly, just everything in Part 4, really.

WishianAnime/manga thread hello Death Note is one of the best things I've ever seen and to this day remains one of my favorites.
Okay for anime, we have things like Space Dandy, Hellsing Ultimate (I do not consider that first anime even legit anymore), Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood only; I don't like the original anime), Digimon, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Sailor Moon, Kill la Kill, the Fate series (Fate/Stay Night being my favorite), and so many others that I could make an entire page listing.
The anime list is slightly more exclusive, but Death Note is still on there (I read the manga long before the anime), and I also really like Vampire Knight, Kamikazi Kaitou Jeanne, Hellsing, and basically anything else by Arina Tanemura.
I also adore the Death Note novels and read them all the time. If it's not obvious which one is my favorite, you're not paying attention. (jk)

Tokyo Ghoul is sort of a mix of horror and tragedy; I watched the anime before reading the manga, but to be honest I'd recommend the latter over the former. The first several episodes have some lovely animation, and the opening and ending theme songs are some of my favorite in recent memory, but the pacing was somewhat unsteady imo. It also suffered a lot from heavy censoring while it was airing, but now that the blu-rays are out, that shouldn't be an issue. If you're into reading manga, I really can't recommend the manga enough though!
(Also I've only seen the first season, but Space Dandy is A+++)

I actually thought the guy that looked like Josuke was Josefumi, and the guy in the sailor suit was Kira. Karera even mentions that he looks really different and assumes he's hiding from someone.
But yeah, basically Josefumi looks like Josuke, and his name matches with Jotaro (Kujo) and Joseph (Josefumi). And Kira is of course Kira, and arguably Jotaro since he's Holly's son… So Gappy is, to varying degrees, an alternate version of four different characters. My brain hurts.
I really like the new stand we saw at the end of the chapter. I'm assuming these new villains are rock humans and the reason they're after Karera somehow relates to the fruit or whatever it is that Josefumi/Kira knows.

Wishiani said this before… i know no one cares about detective conan but i HAVE to express this somewhere oh my god
so okay you know how in japanese there are different registers and speech styles and stuff that anime might make use of and then how if it gets adapted to english they have to come up with something to put in its place….

so okay you know how in japanese there are different registers and speech styles and stuff that anime might make use of and then how if it gets adapted to english they have to come up with something to put in its place….

WishianI'm never sure anymore if my problem with dubs is that they're actually bad or just that hearing the japanese first ruined me?? I didn't mind the dubs I watched as a kid but now sometimes even if a dub isn't badly done, something about it just sounds… fake to me. when sunneth and I watched the tales of vesperia movie a few weeks ago, we put the audio in japanese first because we played the game in japanese, but skimming it in english afterwards, it's so hard to get used to their voices
today I accidentally found the noragami english dub on youtube and I have some minor complaints but it's… better than I expected? all the characters have very japanese names so I was worried they'd get butchered (I keep thinking about kuhZOOki in the busou renkin dub that I… never actually watched…), but from what I heard from skipping through several episodes they actually pronounce them like japanese words. u go voice acting team
now if only they'd add the dub to netflix so I don't have to watch this in youtube qualityq: subs or dub for Brotherhood?? I watched the original FMA in english but I watch more stuff in japanese nowadays so I'm not sure where to start

WishianI am still really okay with most dubs, and I will defend Welcome to the NHK as a great example of a really good dub. Beyond how good a lot of the performances are (especially Chris Patton's), the tendency for dubbers to be very liberal with the script and insert stupid jokes actually helps the show. The actors' sense of humour seems pretty in line with the show's, and their improvisations are often an improvement on the original dialogue. Like, quite a few of my favourite lines are just not in the subbed version. Also bonus points for using profanity sparingly and saving most of the f-bombs for moments that were genuinely funny or dramatically appropriate.
Spice and Wolf also has a really good dub. Well, mainly Holo and Lawrence, and them talking is 90% of the show so that's all that matters.
But yeah, I agree that some dubs can be of poor quality, but there are some good ones out there. It's just a consequence of anime dubbing being seen as not as lucrative as other forms of voice acting.

Wishiandubs are just hit or miss i guess. i think overall i prefer subs or at least as a default they're always fine. but i've liked some dubs. i watched psycho-pass, tsuritama, steins;gate and death note dubbed. and i have a nostalgic soft spot for case closed even though they changed the names….. (jimmy…. HARLEY HARTWELL. why). but it's definitely easy for a dub to be like. idk. cringey or something. i didn't like what i heard of the ookiku furikabutte/big windup dub or the madoka dub really. i also tried watching the first episode of fma:b dubbed but then there was just too much vic mignogna and i was like…. nah… *switches to japanese audio track* i still never watched more than the first episode though. (im bein so lazy the only anime i've watched so far this summer is just yuyuyu and more detective conan lol i've got a whole list…..)

WishianI think the reason I generally dislike dubs is mostly because I don't like most of the standard anime dub voice actors. There are a pool of a couple dozen, and they all can do one or maybe two voices, and they're not voices I like listening to most of the time. I wish voice actors in other areas would branch out to anime, then I would enjoy dubs…John Dimaggio as a bumbling anime villain pls

WishianI actually like dubs and subs. For certain things, I prefer subs (original Fullmetal Alchemist, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, Hellsing, Gurren Lagann), and for others, I prefer the dubs (Space Dandy, Brotherhood, Sailor Moon, Ranma 1/2). Actually, the main reason I like the dubs is because I do really like Vic Mignogna (there were things floating around tumblr about him being bad and I never actually saw any sourced posts on it that weren't twitter screenshots..and those can be faked) and have since the original FMA was released and that's not something I can easily ignore.
And then we have Death Note, where I love both the dub and the sub. Each version has its own things that I like and dislike about it…and Light's laugh might be part of the reason I love the dub. lmao

WishianMy problem with most dubs is that a lot of times they just have this very odd and unnatural sound to them. It's almost asif they're trying to emulate certain elements of the cadence Japanese has and it just don't translate well into English voice acting.
I love the Kino's Journey dub largely cause the actors don't do that.

WishianOh hey, new chapters of JoJo and Berserk translated on the same day.
For the first time in Part 8, I'm starting to feel like all of the pieces are coming together… The revelation that Kira had a Rokakaka tree this whole time and that Karera is being targeted by the Rock Humans is starting to give me some ideas about what is going on with the villains.
My idea for what's been happening: the Rock Humans have collectively formed some kind of “mafia” around illegally selling the Rokakaka fruits to anyone willing to pay for them. While trying to find a cure for Holly, Kira managed to come across a tree, either by stealing it from the organization or by other means, and that marked him, as well as his friends who might have been in on it, as people they needed to “get rid of”.
That would explain how Kira and Josefumi ended up buried in the Wall Eyes: a hit gone wrong. Not to mention we now know Karera is being pursued as well, and has reason to believe Josuke/Josefumi changed his appearance to go into hiding. Plus, her first thought on hearing that Kira is dead is that he was murdered. This would also explain Yagiyama attacking Josuke, although I'll need to re-read those chapters to refresh my memory on certain parts.
And of course, the Higashikatas, mainly Joubin, got involved with this as way to deal with the family disease. This explanation seems to fit with most of the unanswered questions that have been flying around, and other than some more backstory on the Higashkatas, Kira and his gang, and the Rock Humans, it seems like there aren't many more secrets out there.
Then again, I could be completely wrong. I still have the feeling that we're getting close to something, though…
Berserk was also pretty good, but very uneventful considering how long the wait for this chapter was. Thankfully, Miura seems to have committed to a monthly schedule, so hopefully things will start moving soon. They might even get off the boat before the end of this decade.
Now what about Hiatus x Hiatus? -

WishianIf my opinion counts, I like both dubs and subs. I have a preference for dubs, though, as the subs occasionally look too literal. And I usually care more about the graphics than the voices when watching an animated show, so I can't really detect passionate voice actors. Sorry.
I've only ever watched/read Death Note and, when I was about 8 years old, two seasons of the dubbed version of Dinosaur King. I still watch it occasionally for the sheer comic relief factor (and the awesome chibi dinosaurs).

WishianSO HOW 'BOUT THAT JOJO DUB
My feelings on it vary from character to character (What the hell did they do to Caesar?), but I've been consistently impressed by whoever they got to voice Kars.
And speaking of Jojolion tfw every character in Jojolion reminds you of someone you know. Jobin especially. Good god.
Does that mean you know someone like Joshuu? I'm sorry…
I actually really like Joshuu, but that's just because he's such a douchebag that he loops back around and becomes weirdly endearing in a pathetic kind of way. Also, I'm still slowly watching through Hunter x Hunter and I recently finished the Chimera Ant arc and I still can't get over how good it is. I feel like the anime messed up some parts (The pacing during the palace invasion was a bit slower than I feel it should have been. I know that the animated format kind of works against the incredibly long-winded and chaotic exposition-filled action from the manga, but I feel like they were deliberately dragging their feet more than they had to at some points.), but they did so well on so many other parts and this whole arc is just so incredible. Like, I love the rest of HxH, but I feel like the Chimera Ant arc just takes the series to a new level, and the ending gets me so emotional.
And Netero. I just… Even seeing all of that for the second time I'm still blown away at how batshit insane he is. Like, the “Incredibly Powerful Old Man” trope has been around for a while, but people should just… stop. This is pinnacle. You will never be able to do a version of that character that surpasses Isaac Netero in sheer balls-to-the-wall “we have clearly reached a point where we have gone too far, but let's keep going anyway” intensity. The anime did a really good job with his fight against Meruem and I got just as hype as I did when I was reading it for the first time.

real talk though, what is HxH really about? I've seen so much of it everywhere, but it seems a bit long to get intoHunter x Hunter actually doesn't take too long to get into compared to other long running series. It's been around for a while, but it's pretty much always on hiatus so there isn't that much material to catch up on. (In the past three years only nine new chapters have been published. I am not making this up.)
It's basically just about this kid named Gon who wants to become a Hunter and track down his long lost dad, and all the stuff that happens to him and his friends along the way. So far there are four major completed arcs (Hunter Exam, Yorknew City/Phantom Troupe, Greed Island, Chimera Ants), with some minor arcs bridging the gaps between others and a fifth one sort-of in-progress. It starts out like a typical Shonen series, mostly noticeable for all the really great characters and the complex action and plotting, but slowly starts to become a somewhat darker take on the genre with more focus on psychological realism and the less than pleasant aspects of the world.
It's incredibly well-written for what it is, and it still manages to pretty fun and unique. And again, there are a lot of really great characters.

Tell me about it. It came back just long enough to get me interested in what was going on, and then went on hiatus again before anything actually happened…
I can't wait until they actually start the expedition to the Dark Continent, because then when I say “I wonder when they're going to get off the boat” it will be unclear whether I'm talking about HxH or Berserk.Honestly, my favourite part of HxH is the brilliant duality in everything. Yeah, I really like the way it expands on its deceptively simple world until you end up with something a lot less straightforward than what you were expecting. It really makes sense too, since we're seeing it all from the perspective of a child going out into the world for the first time, so we're going into it with his own naive preconceptions. As the story goes on, we slowly start to become aware of the darker aspects lurking behind the scenes.
Also Hisoka. Everything about Hisoka is right. Yet… so very, very, very wrong….
Hisoka is just… I'm honestly kind of amazed that Hisoka exists. How was this allowed? I've got to say that I enjoyed him more in the anime, because actually being able to hear him moan through half of his dialogue just makes it even better.

WishianI'm really excited for the Dark Continent arc too. I've just finished watching the anime, so I'm going to re-read the most recent chapters just as a refresher because there was a lot of political maneuvering going on and I don't think I fully wrapped my head around all of it the first time around.
I'm also really interested in seeing more of Pariston and Ging, too. They're both such interesting characters, and seeing them face off in mind-games is great. I also kind of ship them because wow, there's some weird sexual tension going on there.
It's also great to have Leoria and Kurapika actually doing things again. Especially Leorio. I'm kind of wondering if he will continue being useless, or if him having developed his own Nen ability means he's now a competent fighter. Either way, I'm sure he'll be trying his best.
I also want to see Cheadle do stuff. Don't ignore her now that she's chairman. Is Berserk good? It sounds awesome and a few people I know have hyped it, but it's such a formiddible series to get into at this late stage, lol.
Berserk is really good, but it's certainly not for the faint of heart. It's got all sorts of nasty things portrayed in very graphic detail, but it's actually got really good writing propping up all the sex and gore and manages to not feel gratuitous. Even though the plot has slowed down a bit recently, it still retains my interest on the strength of the characters and the really detailed artwork (and wanting to see Griffith get what has coming to him).
It's not that formidable to get into since, like Hunter x Hunter, it's been around forever but isn't very long due to constant hiatuses (37 volumes long right now).

WishianOhh I haven't even thought of shipping Ging and Pariston before. But now that the idea is in my head I can totally see that, even without re-reading.
Something else I found really neat about the plot is the changes in Leorio and Kurapika. Leorio has mellowed out a bit (without becoming boring
) and seems to be putting his head towards good things. I'm also totally supporting his campaign to become Chairman until the day I die.
Kurapika probably hasn't powered up all that much, and appears to have as little chill as Bluestar (as usual). I have to admit, I found it hard to remain warmed to his character in the last few chapters. I feel like maybe the author's heart wasn't exactly in the characters with the setup for the Dark Continent arc, but the plot is still totally amazing. I am kinda digressing. Anyway what I'm getting at, is that I love the fact that Kurapika had gone from being one of the token secondary protags to becoming an extremely dangerous potential wild card in the succession war.
the machinations of the major plotlines are real.

“I'll keep playing with you until you beg me to stop.”
I don't know if that's the exact line, but I remember Ging saying something like that to Pariston, and damn. These two jerks deserve each other, and my money is on Pariston being one of the main villains.
Kurapika probably hasn't powered up all that much, and appears to have as little chill as Bluestar (as usual). Kurapika was already pretty OP, so I guess it's fine if he hasn't powered up (Although he can only use his most broken abilities against the Phantom Troupe, so…).
I wouldn't say his heart isn't in the characters, but I do think he has kind of written himself into a corner with them a bit. The plot is definitely all there, but the main characters don't have much reason to get very involved. Leorio was just leveraging his status with the Zodiacs to get in touch with Kurapika again, Kurapika only sees the expedition as a secondary part of his main goal, and Gon and Killua are just not around.
Even though Killua is my favourite character, I actually wouldn't mind if he sat this one out, like how Leorio and Kurapika were absent for Greed Island and the Chimera Ant arc. Much like them during those story-lines, Killua doesn't have much stake in what's going on, unless you count theories about Alluka being connected to the Dark Continent. Gon also still has some stuff he has to work out, so I'm not sure what's going to happen to him.

WishianOh, good points. I would never suggest HxH is anywhere near the stage of bad, just that I'm feeling the movements of the greater plotline a lot more than I'm feeling the characters, which isn't something I've been used to with the story so far. Also Ging/Pariston new OTP.
Admittedly I feel the exact opposite about Killua's role in the show. I can see why Gon has the main character role and will probably keep it for the Dark Continent Arc.. You can just see exactly where Gon's character development is going to go. He needs to get stronger to protect what he wants to protect (like 99% of shounen main characters…), but in that process he desperately needs to learn to chill out and assess situations. I love the serving Hisoka delivers to Gon after he wipes him at the Heaven Arena, simply because Gon needs to develop in a way which is totally contrary to every part of his personality.
But if this kamikaze Nen powerhouse skill is going to be a 'major thing' going forward, it will be interesting to see if Gon does turn around. Because otherwise he's so rip.
/
Anyway I find Killua interesting in the major story for the same reason I'm growing to like Kurapika in the Dark Continent arc – because of the political intrigue. I can't help but shake the idea that the Zoldyck family has more politics in it than meets the eye, and Killua serves as a gloriously flawed narrator for that part of the story. He's extremely switched on, but there just seems to be a high level of vagueness and tolerance when it comes to family matters.
Otherwise maybe I'm just super paranoid about the Zoldycks and reading into things too far. It's totally possible there's really nothing there. But I refuse to let anything in HxH slide which could potentially be a thing… xD

WishianI agree that the Zoldycks probably have a lot of influence in global politics (Political assassinations, the fact that they seem to have loads of money, etc.), but that doesn't necessarily mean that Killua is up to speed on all of that. I'd say that by now he doesn't really want anything to do with his family anymore. We might see his father or Zeno again, though.
But yeah, I love how Killua contrasts with Gon. Whereas Gon is the naive kid who always charges headfirst into things without thinking, Killua is the trained professional who calmly assesses the situation and tends to act more cautiously (Although that's mostly Illumi's influence.). He's really good at reigning Gon in, and they compliment each other very well… until the Chimera Ant arc at least. For me, they are The OTP.
As far as Gon's recklessness goes, I really love the way they deal with it as a character flaw. I mean, that kind of thing is common for a lot of shonen characters, but with Gon it's made clear that a lot of the things he does are incredibly dangerous, and it almost seems like he has no regard for his own safety. Between that and various characters commenting on his potential or describing him as a “monster”, it's like they were foreshadowing his fight with Pitou from the very beginning.
Speaking of Killua and his family, one thing that always bugged me is that they never taught him about Nen. Not just that he was never trained, but that he hadn't even heard of it at first. Considering they put so much faith into him to become head of the family and Kalluto is already an experienced Nen user, it's weird that they kept him in the dark. Mastering darts was a higher priority, I guess.

WishianRe the Zoldycks that's what I'm thinking too. In fact I feel like Killua seems to be totally in the dark on anything his family has been doing. And there's something about shafting Illumi as the heir and then sending him to take care of Killua in his travels which makes my stomach turn. Especially considering is damned Illumi were talking about, omg. His methods are so whack, and totally unfair for someone without Nen training.
I'd wager we will see a lot of Silva and Zeno in the future… especially if they make this Dark Continent arc the big one. There's just too much about the Zoldycks that I want to see. :'(
The other thing is establishing Isaac Netero and Zeno Zoldycks as basically ultimate Nen badasses and then leaving only one of them alive for the balance of the story…. Something more has to come from it. There's no way you'd build up Zeno so much just to put him in the corner.
At risk of being creepy, Netero and Zeno are also the OTP but not quite as much. Although I am inclined to agree with you, Gon/Killua forever.

WishianI've recently made some new purchases in the world of manga lmao
I got volumes two and three of Hellsing, and volumes three and four of Sakura Hime: The Legend of Princess Sakura. I have plans to buy the rest of Hellsing over the next couple weeks, along with Sakura Hime. I also want to eventually get the reprints of Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne (originally known as Phantom Thief Jeanne in Japan), and I might start collecting some of the early volumes of Naruto… I used to enjoy reading those.

I suppose it's true that Killua's lack of training could be a result of deliberately keeping him in the dark and Illumi's over-protectiveness. I mean, even before he learned Nen he was significantly stronger than like 99% of the population. He was definitely fit to assassinate anyone who wasn't a Nen user.
The other thing is establishing Isaac Netero and Zeno Zoldycks as basically ultimate Nen badasses and then leaving only one of them alive for the balance of the story…. Something more has to come from it. There's no way you'd build up Zeno so much just to put him in the corner.
I'd actually kind of like it if they were established as not the absolute strongest (But still at least on the top tier.). Earlier in the Chimera Ant arc, Netero mentions that he's out of practice and was in his prime decades ago, and even though he spends all of the time between then and his fight with Meruem training to get his strength back I like to believe that he still wasn't quite back in peak physical form. Not to mention he still got his ass handed to him anyway, so I'm definitely open to the possibility of even stronger things being out there. The whole idea of the Dark Continent is that the world is much bigger than what you originally expected, so I wouldn't be surprised if we started seeing people who are somehow even stronger.

Will we have Rohan made of rocks this arc? That was a really good chapter. It was almost over too fast, but I guess that's just because of how fast-paced it was. I really liked the Rock Human infodump, too.
I had assumed that remark about mangaka was more to say “A Rock Human would never become a mangaka because they would miss so many deadlines” than hinting at a Rock Rohan. But regardless, I would still love to see JJL Rohan, Rock Human or not.

EXCELLENT.
In all honesty, once you get into it JoJo isn't that scary despite it's length. Rather than a single continuous story, it's made of up multiple connected “parts” that can each essentially stand on their own, so you don't need to worry about getting lost in an incredibly long and convoluted story. Binge reading isn't entirely necessary. It actually took me about a year to get fully up-to-date, and that didn't dampen the experience at all.

Wishian- currently watching: Sailor Moon Crystal (I'm on episode 15), One Piece (episode 174)
- next to watch: catching up on Attack On Titan because I stopped when it was temporarily unavailable on Crunchyroll (I have it bookmarked to my computer still… I was at episode 21), also going to tackle Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (I've watched the first one but I've been meaning to start brotherhood for the longest woops)
- considering: Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Hunter x Hunter, Kill La Kill, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and Space Dandy
- have previously watched: FMA, Fruits Basket, Hetalia (stopped a little after the dub came out), Bleach (I was like nearly 200 episodes in I think??? But yeah I probably won't pick that back up again in the near future), D.N. Angel (I really couldn't tell you what happened in it because I watched it so long ago… except that With is adorable), and Soul Eater (IT WAS GREAT I LOVED IT)

I tried to read Naruto one time because I was really curious about Kakashi, but that was the one and only time that I got a computer virus… trying to read Naruto…
It was really sad… -

Wishianconsidering: Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Hunter x Hunter, Kill La Kill, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and Space Dandy
my 5 cents whether it's wanted or not c:
Puella Magi Madoka Magica is an absolute must.
It's only 12 episodes of 25 minutes long long, I've marathoned it a few times with friends in one night before. (it hurt but it was possible)
Hunter x Hunter (especially the manga or 2011 anime) is also absolutely fantastic and it's a lot longer, but possibly the best anime/manga series in human history.
Kill La Kill didn't grip me but I hear a lot of good things.
I have just started the Jojo manga and so far it's totally odd and absolutely glorious. I don't know much about Space Dandy. ;c

Wishian- considering: Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Hunter x Hunter, Kill La Kill, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and Space Dandy

These are all really really good choices. Madoka Magica will destroy you, but it's probably one of the most perfect 12 episode animes out there. Great plot, music, characters, and visuals, and a whole bunch of very sad things happening in a short period of time.
I'm also going to second all of the praise for JoJo. It's easily my favourite manga, and one of my favourite things period. It's hugely influential, yet at the same time I can't think of anything else that has perfectly captured the unique creativity and weirdness of JoJo. If you're not sure about reading the manga, you could try watching the anime and then picking up the manga from that point onward if it interests you. The issue with manga vs. anime is that the manga has been around forever, whereas the anime is more recent, so the manga is much further ahead.
Hunter x Hunter would have to be my second favourite manga, and the anime is a must-watch too. It's much closer to your typical shonen series than JoJo, but it stands out with the quality of its writing as well as a few twists thrown into the usual formula.

I sneakily omitted the sheer psychological torment from my post to make the series sound friendlier. But this is a really good summary of PMMM.

WishianI really need to rewatch madoka because I think watching it over several months kind of… ruined the experience?? tbh it's not exactly my genre so I'm not sure how much I would have gotten into it anyway, but everyone around me is always crying about it and I was just like “okay cool” so I feel like I watched it wrong 😡
I never watched any of the movies either though, I should do that somedaymeanwhile, the latest english volume of noragami… i will cry over that
I don't know anyone else who reads it but I need a place to talk about it because I totally called half of this before it happened
I mean I knew some spoilers for this and the last volume before I read them (which was actually fortunate because the vol. 5 cliffhanger was brutal) but I correctly guessed that aiha would regret going along with this plan and free kazuma, and that kazuma would somehow throw himself in danger
I've been wondering this whole time if bishamon knew about kazuma's involvement in the slaughter, but wow… wow……
the “a god is never wrong” thing is pretty bold, but the question of who's to “blame” for the whole mess is something I've been thinking about a lot, and I'm really glad they've ALL been vindicated, or at least aren't holding it against each otherI shamelessly ship kazuma with bishamon though so I'm not sure how to feel about tomathis is exciting because I no longer know any (important) spoilers for future chapters, but also kind of disappointing because I get the feeling the story is going to shift away from my favorite characters now

WishianIt's almost like they deliberately waited to release the anime the same year the first game takes place.
The character designs that they've shown look kind of weird, but it might end up looking better in motion. I thought the same thing about the JoJo anime at first, but it turned out great. Not much to go on right now, but I look forward to all the news and PVs we'll be getting over the next 6 months.

WishianSo over the summer I got really into anime, it's one of the biggest things I spent my summer free time doing.
Before this summer, I'd only seen some Hayao Miyazaki films, about half of Death Note and some stray episodes here and there. Now… I've seen a lot more than that.
My top five so far would have to be this:
1. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood: Not only the best anime I've seen yet, but one of the best shows of any kind I've seen ever. I loved almost every minute of this; the storyline was gripping and mind-blowing, and thematically deep, the characters were lovable and memorable, the animation was great, the action scenes were phenomenal, and even the humor was good. I do have some issues with it, and I felt it ended a little too happily, but nothing's perfect, and most of them are pretty minimal. This is one of the two anime series I've seen that I'd give a perfect 10/10 to, the other one being…
2. Steins;gate: I see this has already been talked about on this thread, and I agree with almost everything that's been said. It starts off slow, but even when it's slow it's still good, introducing concepts and building characters and plotlines that more than pay off in the end. Starting at episode 12, things really pick off, and we see a time-loop plot line done right (take notes Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya). The plotline and world mechanics are amazingly well developed, the concepts are fascinating and mind-blowing, and the characters are amazing and have amazing chemistry with each other. Seriously, this is one of the only romances in a show that I've ever gotten truly invested in. The only complaint I have is also the complaint that's been brought up in this thread; the jokes about Rukako's gender. But other than that, 10/10. This is also the most recent anime I've completed.
3. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion: Also known as Deus Ex Machina: The Series. Like seriously, I've never seen a show with this much deus ex machinas that I liked this much. In all seriousness, though, this show is ridiculous and over the top, but also totally awesome. It's incredibly idealistic, but it revels in that and makes the best of it as it can, with a gripping plotline that explores some really deep and thought-provoking concepts and morally grey areas that a lot of shows don't dare to go to. The characters are also very well developed, and some of them even tragic. It also has my favorite anime ending thus far.
4. Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day: This is so far the only story that's ever made me legit cry in my teenage/young adult years. Though it's a little shaky at times, overall the story is captivating and emotional the entire step of the way, with some of the most realistic, three-dimensional characters I've ever seen in anime going through real tragedy. I also found it very relatable, as someone who had an incredibly close group of friends growing up, and has one now.
5. Nichijou: Hands down the funniest anime I've seen yet, and the most relaxing as well. I honestly can't find anything wrong with this one objectively; only that sometimes I don't find it all that funny as other times. The animation is gorgeous, the characters are lovable, and it's absolutely hilarious, with some of the most ridiculous situations I've ever seen in a comedy show.
I also watched Tokyo Ghoul, which was good during the first season and meh during the second, Ao No Exorcist, which was okay, Soul Eater, which barely missed the top five list (I really liked it except for the ending), No. 6, which is pretty good and has a really well-written romance in it, both Little Witch Academia films which I LOVED, and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, which had a pretty good first season, a meh second season which was dominated by the boring Endless Eight arc and then a final plot arc that made me annoyed at everything in the show, and a fantastic movie that's better than the series in my opinion.
Also, as far as movies go, my favorite anime film is Princess Mononoke.
Right now, I'm watching One Piece. I'm only 79 episodes in, so I have a LOOOONG way to go, but so far I love it. Sure it's got a ton of flaws, but I really like the characters and the story is a TON of fun.
I'm also reading Tokyo Ghoul the manga. I really like it so far, but I'm not that far into it.

Good sir, your throne has been usurped.
(I'm sure nobody cares, but as I remember there is some cursing in this– you have been warned)
Also, yes. I do watch some anime. DN Angel is probably my all-time favorite (I've read a fair portion of the manga, too), but I used to be a total Hetalia nerd a few years back. I also greatly enjoyed Death Note, and while I've only seen the first two episodes I must say that Puella Magi Madoka Magica I have to admit that everything about it is fabulous.
When I was several years younger, I am ashamed/proud to say that my anime of choice was probably Bakugan of all things. I even had some figures. Heck, if you don't count good ole Pokemon, Bakugan could be considered my 'gateway anime' (though let's be honest here, it was probably mostly DN Angel). Monsuno is also great IMO.
(TBH I don't watch a ton and when I do, I usually end up watching the first few episodes of something and deciding I don't like it enough to continue. That or it's several hundred episodes long and the mere idea of attempting to watch it all makes my eyes water.)
There's some others that I want to watch (I think Durarara and Danganronpa caught my eye) but I haven't gotten around to watching them yet.
In terms of just plain manga, I used to really like +Anima.

Oh jeez, I don't know what to say to that… I would recommend that you keep watching, because you'll be in for a treat.
Some people say it doesn't get good until episode 3, and while I respectfully disagree they are right that that is the point where things start to notably escalate. One of the best things about this series is how it's able to go in so many different directions in such a short amount of time. I can almost guarantee that your impression of the show by the end will be completely different from what it is now.
Also seconding the love for Baccano! (I mean, I already mentioned it but still). I haven't seen it in a while though, and I've been planning to re-watch it. It's certainly a good gateway anime, and the comparisons to Quentin Tarantino movies aren't entirely unfounded.

OH MY GOD if you do i will 100% join that sounds amazingi love pmmm and basically anything that involves girls beating stuff up/being magical (but finding stuff like that which does't have fanservice is hard…)
other than that i am very into sports anime, mainly diamond no ace and haikyuu r/n but also others. other favourites of mine include: black rock shooter, gekkan shoujo nozaki-kun, hunter x hunter (2011), pmmm (as stated above), psycho pass and gurren lagann. i also have a myanimelist with a bunch of other stuff i've watched (the stuff i've put here is basically everything with a rating of 10)
the first anime i watched was ginga densetsu weed when i was like… 10 or so lmao i found 3 episodes on the internet somewhere and watched them in the wrong order, then realised my mistake. then i forgot about anime for a couple of years until a couple of people (now my best friends) told me to watch hetalia. that was a time

play mafiaaaa!!!!!
ALSO DID SOMEONE SAY PMMM
I think pmmm is one of the anime's that has stayed with me after all this time tbh. I've never rewatched it but I loved it SO MUCH i honestly just don't know how to describe it. I loved the pacing, the emotions, and how real and raw everyone was. All their motivations were so well written out and the graphics are amazing… anyways.
I'd definitely say that while ep 1-2 are really good, It doesn't really captivate you until the end of the third ep. I think that's the moment where everyone just has that realization that this anime is so much more than what they were expecting. Also on the topic of other animes, i've seen klk brought up a few times. Overall, I like the series, but I do find the beginning especially weak; I really felt like I had to force myself to watch the first 10 or so episodes. The second half gets really good, but there were some parts that I felt could have been taken more seriously.
Have I ever done my top 5 anime on this thread?

I have to say that I don't remember! Let me google it.
…Aaaand no, hasn't been updated since '05.
wait, was that not the end of it? the back of the tenth book (the latest one, released in '05) says it's the final volume…
I haven't read it in forever though so I can't remember what was going on, much less if/how it was wrapped upbut I kind of want to revisit it because I love half-animal/transforming characters…
what sites do you guys use to watch anime that's currently airing?? except for the old dubs they used to show on tv, I've never actually kept up with an anime as it comes out… all the subs I've watched have been on dvd/netflix/hulu (and those three-part youtube videos in the good ol' days) so I have no idea which sites are available or reliable or going to require me to do weird torrenting things I don't understand if I want to watch this before the season is over

I have to be That Guy who always pops up to say the manga is better, because the anime is one of those adaptations where they veered off from the manga's plot and made up a temporary ending (with the creator's input, but still). so it kind of was tacked on tbh, the anime timeline got rushed and partially messed up. when I finished it I was a little surprised that that was really the end (and then more surprised to see that that “end” wasn't in the manga at all)
I wish hiyori could do more
sux being the only human character. at least she gets to kick phantoms sometimes
and constantly beat yato up. once she suplexed him into the river for ignoring her. classic -

WishianI'm still hesitant about a group marathon, both because I'm super busy this week (and during the weekend because Thanksgiving) and because I feel like watching something I have so many feelings about with a bunch of people would be awkward and probably just descend into me screeching about Homura.
As far as this season goes, I'll probably start watching One-Punch Man once I have the time. I've been interested in it for a while, and when the anime was first announced I was like “Oh, I should start reading the manga, and then hopefully I'll be up-to-date once the anime starts” but then I never got around to it. I guess instead I'll just watch the anime and then read the manga after it ends.

In all honesty, although the scene in question is often cited as a turning point in people's views on the series, I really don't see it as such. I mean, let's face it: character death is pretty vanilla. It's something we've all seen before. The parts of the show that are really soul-crushing come afterwards. I was actually spoiled for that scene going in, and it didn't impair my enjoyment at all because episode 3 is just the tip of the iceberg.

I definitely agree with this to a point. There's a lot of heartbreak yet to come. I think much of the impact from episode 3 is just the suddenness and brutality of it. Mami is an extremely undeveloped main character of the series, who is written off in such a brutal way. Also when the series was being aired it was like, promoted as a 5 man band mahou shoujo anime. Before the deconstructive phase, having one of the 5 man band killed off 3 episodes in with virtually no character development was basically unheard of. From a mahou shoujo culture point of view this episode rocked my socks.

That is true. I mean, I wasn't there when it originally aired, so I wouldn't know what it was like. I watched it the summer immediately after it finished, and I already knew enough by reputation that a death wasn't the most shocking thing to me.
I still do think that an abrupt death is a very simple way to be “dark”, though. There are tons of other things, even within the first two episodes, that I would rather point out as what makes Madoka so unique and well-done.

I totally agree in retrospect, there are elements of the first three episodes which are much more disturbing or dark or just downright brilliant than Mami's death. Personally, every single Madoka/Homura scene tugs at my heartstrings fiercely, every time I rewatch the series. There is a lot of depth in a lot of areas in the anime, which is what makes it so amazing.
But with Mami's death, it wasn't the suddenness which got to me so much. It was how totally flawed Mami's character was. As soon as they established the positive and negative parts of her life, and only moments after we got an insight into how truly lonely she was, and how willing to help others just for the sake of helping them, she was gone. 5 man band shows are bordering on infamous for forcing character development onto every single one of the MCs, regardless of their ultimate fate. Irrespective of the shock value of Mami's death, and the fact that she died on principle, I was really shaken up by how under-developed she was. 😡
Compare for example, the development of Sayaka and of Kyoko. I'm liable to fanboy for the rest of time, so I'll refrain from ranting about how much I love them, both individually and together. Sure, the conclusion of episode 9 is a horrific combo of everything that could possibly be heartbreaking (not just with Sayaka and Kyoko, but also Homura/Madoka, Kyubey being the biggest turd ever, the impending Walpurgisnacht, etc.). But I don't feel as though the deaths of Sayaka and Kyoko are as shocking. Despite the fact we're already expecting more bloodshed in the series, this episode left a massive hole in my heart. But actually, after the original heartbreak wore off, I found the deaths oddly satisfying. They had both reached the point in their character development which I was totally waiting for them to reach. It's a heaps poetic ending for them both and I loved it.am i just a terrible person

the end with the space hugmy tears
I think ending was absolutely perfect. Had it ended on a straight up sad note it would've been just another grimdark series I think, though a very well written one. But ending on such a bittersweet and hopeful note really made the show something quite beautiful and special (and why I have two Madoka wallscrolls in my room a poster, I need more animu wall decoration diversity)
Also tfw a very close friend of yours gets the two of you matching Homura and Madoka soul gem necklaces for your bday and it gets you all weepy.
Also on a kind of related note:
Watching Shin Sekai Yori again.
Oh my god I really love that show, it's very, very interesting and a pleasant break from most dystopia shows in that the oppressive horrible government has very valid moral reasons for what they do. I'd really recommend giving it a watch, though bare in mind while watching that practically everything in the show is foreshadowing something and the monster rat episode that seems kinda fillery really isn't. -

I totally agree about every scene with Homura. It's more something you realize in retrospect, but there's so much there once you start to see it. Homura is my favourite character and I ship Madoka/Homura aggressively, so I always find something to be sad about whenever Homura is onscreen. And let's not forget the opening, which was foreshadowing episode 10 the entire time.
I also really agree with you about Sayaka and Kyoko. I mean, “deconstruction” has kind of become a cliche in anime, so going in I was kind of expecting another good-but-not-great grimdark series, but the way it handled these things was so much better. The deaths aren't just there for shock value, or to show off how “dark” the show is. There is an element is genuine tragedy in them, since every character has a role in their own fates and they all feel so appropriate. That's part of why it succeeds at being so sad. Even Mami, who admittedly does fall a bit into the shock value category, gets a meaningful death showing off her loneliness and vulnerability.
What I also like is how the deaths aren't just a “rocks fall, everyone dies” type situation. The characters are completely trapped from the second they form a contract. There's a sense of dread involved knowing that you're stuck in a situation where there is little to no chance for a happy ending (or in Madoka's case, that terrible things are happening to your friends and that you're powerless to stop them).
The part of Madoka that gets to me the most is
the end with the space hugmy tears
I think ending was absolutely perfect. Had it ended on a straight up sad note it would've been just another grimdark series I think, though a very well written one. But ending on such a bittersweet and hopeful note really made the show something quite beautiful and special (and why I have two Madoka wallscrolls in my room a poster, I need more animu wall decoration diversity)
I agree with this too. The way it ends is another really good example of what I was saying above. It's not just dark for the sake of dark, but a really beautiful show that just happens to have dark elements.

Also tfw a very close friend of yours gets the two of you matching Homura and Madoka soul gem necklaces for your bday and it gets you all weepy.
Omg that present is totally amazing.
Same here tbh. The space hug gets me every singe time, irrespective of how cheesy it is. Also in the new timeline, with the suggestions that Madoka is still watching over them… I am a massive crybaby for this show. It's really just too amazing. xD
You're so right about this, as well…. it's so interesting how all of the MC endings have a tendency to be in twos except for Mami. Kyoko and Sakurai complement each other, as Homura and Madoka do. Mami is the only one who lacks that completion.

Wishianto jump right into the discussion
i personally find pmmm as a tragedy more than a “grim dark spin on a classic anime trope”. all of the characters are doomed to death or almost scarring misfortune, and even when the protagonist changes it for good there's still an air of the story being unfinished and fake and even depressing at some times. pmmm left me very unsettled when i finished rebellion.

WishianI haven't watched PMMM in a few years, but I did think it was a very well-made series. I loved all the different animation styles they used for the witch barriers.
I actually liked the ending a lot. I've read about Rebellion, but I haven't watched it yet. I know a lot of people were really upset about its effects on the overarching plot, and from the spoilers I've read, I'm not really sure how to feel about it. -

It's an honour. I spend a lot of time thinking of ways to arrange my gushing into more coherent formats.
I actually liked the ending a lot. I've read about Rebellion, but I haven't watched it yet. I know a lot of people were really upset about its effects on the overarching plot, and from the spoilers I've read, I'm not really sure how to feel about it.I actually went to see Rebellion in the theatre and I have very mixed feelings about it. I really like the fundamental idea of what they were trying to do, but I have issues with the execution and the fact that they re-opened a story with a lot of closure. I really like that they focused on the more selfish aspects of Homura's personality, and how she's blinded by her devotion to Madoka and truly believes that what she wants is what Madoka wants (There's even a scene where she has a conversation with a version of Madoka that she made up in her head, and uses that to justify what she's doing), but it feels like they rushed that development and tried to make her too overtly villainous.
I could go on and on about how Homura is a genuinely flawed character, but her heel turn is just a bit too much and makes too little sense. If it had just ended with Homura dying and finally being able to be with Madoka, and stayed as a standalone epilogue instead of an extention of the story, I would have liked it a lot better. The climax was like 10 minutes too long, too.
But it's really gorgeous, too. Like, we've talked about how great the witches' labyrinths look, and those kind of visuals are just all over Rebellion. Really nice action scenes, too.

Wishianthe only manga i read is detective conan. i'll read the chapters as they come out and then watch the anime episodes as they come out. for everything else i'll just watch something i'm interested in and then occasionally go and read the manga afterwards to continue the story (e.g. Wandering Son and Kuroko no Basuke. i intend to do this with Ookiku Furikabutte when i get around to it lmao)
i also attempted to read the attack on titan manga after the anime and was still into it for a while but i also got tired & over it through that aforementioned arc. i think i dropped it after the chapter that revealed levi's real name
… either that or i just heard that that happened and decided to read it and i had already dropped it? i actually don't remember anymore

I find it funny how “Attack on Titan phase” is now a thing. Like, the anime is now two years old and people are already looking back on it like that. It's weird seeing things progress like that.
RE: Brotherhood vs. original FMA:
The 2003 series was one of my first anime, so I'm pretty nostalgic for it, but I will admit that Brotherhood is the better series. I do think that there are a few scenes early on that the first series does better than Brotherhood, but since it's essentially incomplete Brotherhood wins due to just how much more fleshed out everything is. I actually only watched Brotherhood this past summer, since I had already read the manga and never got around to the anime, and I will admit I liked the ending a lot better when I didn't have to wait a month in between chapters.RE: Anime vs. Manga:
I used to primarily watch anime, but nowadays I'm trying to get more into reading manga. I dunno, I guess I'm just picky about being familiar with the source material rather than just an adaptation, and I am getting much more comfortable with the difference in format. Obviously, there are cases where I end up watching the anime first, but I always try to make an effort to read the manga from the beginning.Plus, if you only follow anime you end up missing out on a lot of good stuff that just might not get animated, like post-Golden Age Berserk, JoJo beyond Part 3
please prove me wrong, based David, 20th Century Boys, etc. etc. There's also the possibility of a bad adaptation, or long-running series that suffer from filler and inconsistent animation. -

WishianI haven't read Blue Exorcist since before the anime started. Is the anime any good?
It does the usual anime thing. It's good fun but kind of trash, then it veers off in weird directions.
Now the manga on the other hand. Omg the Ao no Exorcist manga. There is one reason to keep up with it but I have to spoiler it. xD
True Cross Order vs. the Illuminati.
I'm more of a manga enthusiast than anime enthusiast. I find with manga I kinda force myself to really get invested into a story. Whereas with anime, if the story slows down at all (which unfortunately a lot of manga adaptions do), I lose interest.

WishianAoT's shoddy pacing really bums me out. I really enjoyed early AoT where the fundamental world building stuff is getting laid out, and I think the titans themselves are genuinely quite creepy as monsters and their designs play off the Uncanny Valley thing very nicely. But that pacing just kills it for me.
re: Anime vs Manga
I used to read a lot more manga than I do now, (Where I mostly watch anime) though I'm trying to get back into reading more manga. At the moment, however, JoJo's the only manga I keep up with.re: Weeb Phases
I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with Elder Scrolls lore but I think weebery works very similar to how lycanthropy works in TES. That being:
-You have a beast spirit living within you alongside your regular old human spirit
-Barring an extremely obscure and difficult arcane ritual, you're not going to be able to rid yourself of your beast spirit
-You have to learn how to walk the thin line between indulging the beast spirit too much and suppressing it too much.
-If you indulge your beast too much it'll overtake you and you'll go completely feral and basically live your life as an animal.
-If you suppress your beast too much it'll go on a horrible rampage when it manages to break free and will likely be able to overtake your human spirit
-Once you die your beast spirit will literally drag you to the hunting grounds of the god of the hunt where you will spend eternity as one of his houndsAfter my middle school anime phase I was deeply, deeply ashamed and wanted to distance myself from it as much as possible. So for almost the entirety of my later adolescence I did a lot of, “I mean I like Serial Experiments Lain but overall I'm not crazy about anime…”
And then I watched PMMM and the beast broke free. Now I cant get it under control at all. I've become a feral weeb. When I pass the catgirl inside me will come drag my spirit off to the Great Anime Con Beyond where I will carmeldance for eternity.

Oh man, this is so true. I'm a bit in love with the AoT world which is probably why I keep up with the manga loosely, but you're right, it's been a bit of a mess. It's a real shame that a monthly manga can't seem to keep on track. But oh well, I can hardly judge considering I'm still adddicted. xD
And you're so right about the uncanny valley titan thing. I hadn't even thought about titans since learning what the uncanny valley is, but they're a really neat example of how to break it to your own advantage.

WishianFinally got around to reading Baoh!
I thought it was pretty good, but how short it is really hurt it. It had a lot of potential, but just not enough time to develop the characters or really go much of anywhere with the plot. There's not much you can really do in only two volumes, but I enjoyed what it did accomplish.
The similarities to JoJo are everywhere. The fights seemed like they'd fit right in with older JoJo. There was also a character whose facial expressions were REALLY reminiscent of Speedwagon's in Phantom Blood. You can definitely see the stage being set for Araki's later work.
All in all, a pretty decent quick read, especially for Araki fans.
Now to watch the OVA sometime soon… -

Wishianaragoto… might actually be the first anime I've ever watched as it airs? no dubs, no year-later english releases, no marathoning dvds or youtube videos,
just the cruel pain of waiting… weirdanyway got the next manga volume (7), the contents of the noragami ovas make so much more sense when you put them where they belong in the timeline…… and it looks like I was right about my favorite characters getting sidelined again from here on out but the five pages of God Court made up for it omg (also the guide training scene, I really wanted them to get to talk more and now here we are. so proud)
also on the anime vs. manga topic, I generally will stick with whichever format I discovered it in and only pick up the other if I'm really into it. though now that I think about it, a lot of the manga-only things I used to follow just didn't have anime adaptations, whereas I did check out (or start with) the anime for almost everything else I read, so I guess you could say I'm a little more into anime? if only because I feel like it's more accessible (what with so much of it being on tv/the internet and perhaps less of a niche thing… unless I'm just biased because I almost never read things online *shrug*)

WishianOne-Punch Man is ridiculously good to start with!! Saitama and Genos are fantastic. Also the low-grade superheroes are consistently heaps entertaining. License-less Rider ftw.
One thing I really love about OPM is that there isn't a crazy host of people with mad superpowers wandering around just 'cause. Even though it's completely over the top and satirical, most of the heroes have achieved their strength in an explainable way. Even though the explanations rarely line up with the powers. xD I don't know what I'm talking about. I just like it.

WishianOk ok re: Jojo
There's this post I've seen going around that's like 'life lessons from each JoJo' and for Johnny they just put 'Don't be Johnny'Oh god it's making me so mad. Like Part 7 easily explores its themes the most in depth of any part and Johnny arguably had the most character development of the JoJos and just 'Don't be Johnny'
Not 'You're capable of more than you think' or anything. Just 'Don't be Johnny.'It's gettin me in such a fightin mood

WishianI'm on mobile, so I can't quote right now, but Johnny is honestly one of my absolute favorite JoJo characters, and I like tons of characters from that series. I found him to be a super relatable character. Steel Ball Run in general really made me think about things differently, and had a pretty big impact on my life. I still try to re-read it every year. It feels like a lot of people I see on tumblr these days ignore the story, which is too bad, because I personally think SBR definitely had the strongest story out of all of JoJo so far.
I also see a lot of hate for Giorno, which I really don't get. He's one of my favorite JoJos, but a lot of people seem to really hate him for some reason. -

WishianSBR's amazing. I'd say easily the most well-written part of JoJo. The only reason DiU is my fav rather than SBR is cause the interactions between Okuyasu, Josuke and Koichi reminded me a lot of my BFFs and me.
Part 7's one of those works that leaves me with a certain sort of feeling in my chest when I finish it. I'm not quite sure how to describe the sensation but it's that feeling you get after you feel a lot of emotions. It's really very beautiful.
The core cast of characters are all so well-written, Johnny's character development is very believable and well-done, and Gyro and Johnny's friendship is very, very poignant.
Also Lucy Steel is probably my fav character in Jojo. Her or Josuke, it's a hard pick. Also re: Giorno
I think people's issue with Giorno is that his character is more subtle than the other JoJos. Like Jonathan's so extremely noble, Joseph has that really lively trickster archetype thing going, Jotaro plays up the bad boy trope to an extreme degree (Though I love him most when I interpret him as a kid trying really hard to look cool, esp with how he mellows out after part 3), etc.
Giorno is a relatively understated character, particularly with how he contrasts to the other chars in part 5. I mean the Passione introduction we get involves a man screaming about there being 4 cakes, some kid being godawful at math, a guy stabbing this kid in the face for being so bad at math, and another guy peeing in a teacup. All of this in the span of like 15 minutes. I think all this makes Giorno work very well as a character, though, since he so often plays the polite voice of reason in all this chaos. -

WishianRE: Johnny and SBR:
I feel like the point of posts like that is be funny by seriously oversimplifying things, but it sounds like that person didn't even try. If I had to reduce Johnny's character development to a single lesson, I would go with “The journey is often more rewarding than the destination.”But yeah, I agree that Johnny's character arc is really well-written. Joseph is still my favourite JoJo because of how endlessly entertaining he is, but Johnny is definitely one of the best written characters in the series. I'm honestly kind of amazed at how good the writing in SBR is. It's incredible how Araki was able to put together such a serious and emotional story with mature themes, and still make it work with the general craziness of JoJo. Like, the main villain is the President of the United States and he explains his motives through talking about napkins, and this all makes complete sense and is actually one of my favourite villain monologues ever. I love it.
Lucy also is another one of my favourite characters. Just behind Joseph/tied with Kira.
RE: Giorno:
I am admittedly one of those people that doesn't care for Giorno, but I certainly don't hate him. I just can't think of anything to say about him, really. With all of the other JoJos there's something about them that stands out to me or that I react very strongly to, but Giorno just feels like he gets overshadowed by the rest of the gang.I did kind of like him a bit early on, but it almost feels like Araki changed his mind about what he wanted to do with Part 5. After a certain point, it starts to feel like Buccellati is the protagonist and Giorno is just some guy who's tagging along because their goals coincide. I don't mind it, since I really like Buccellati, but it does kind of rob Giorno of opportunities for character development.

WishianI absolutely love the art style they use for the witches, too. It's very unique and absolutely gorgeous.
Adam you just said everything I wanted to say so eloquently. I think I'm going to print and frame your post so I can read it out every time I get excited about PMMM.
These were literally my exact thoughts. I just watched it now btw.
I will say that the “cake” scene and the fight before it as well as the time fight scene are possibly my two favorite stand-alone scenes of the entire franchise though.
If I were to rate the series a 9 or 10, the movie would probably be a 7 or 8.

Wishianto answer the genre question, I don't know if I have a favorite… though that might just be because I'm not into enough things for there to be a real pattern, or I just don't know what it's called
but I have noticed that I rarely get invested in stories (anime, manga, or otherwise) that don't have some sort of fantasy or supernatural element to them? and I feel like most of the series I like would fall somewhere in between the typical shounen and shoujo labels, i.e. they include significant action/fight scenes but not ones that are 300 years long, and focus on character relationships/emotions/possibly romance but not to the exclusion of everything else (I think there is a word for this but I can't remember it)
…I just realized why I love noragami so much
anyway between those two I usually fall more on the shounen side of things, beyond that I'm too genre-illiterate to say lol

That's awesome
I read the manga for a while, but it became really hard to find a reliable source for a while so I ended up phasing out of it a bit.. It's really fantastic, but the story is a little messy. It'd be nice whether the anime makes changes to keep it a bit more straight-forward.You're so right though, for what it is (satirical shounen series I guess), it's so much better than you'd expect at a first glance.

WishianHey in the spirit of Halloween I recommend Boogiepop Phantom to all of you.
Plot:
I don't want to give too much away but basically a pillar of light suddenly appears in the night and the series follows the strange stuff that starts to happen to the high school kids who saw the light, as well as mysterious disappearances which are being blamed on an urban legend called Boogiepop.
It reminds me of Paranoia Agent in a lot of ways and I quite enjoyed it.Also I really like the OP.
Serial Experiments Lain and Shin Sekai Yori also both have a decent deal of spookiness to them, but I've recommended them before.

WishianSerial Experiments Lain
Oh I watched this one, but when describing it to others, I always say it's like the script of a news ancor, a religious fanatic tv show, a horror show and a “deep” anime were all walking down the hallway, and they collided at the four way intersection. Instead of figuring out who's is who's, they just went “let's just write an anime out of this!” and Serial Experiments Lain was born. Or at least, that's the vibe it gets from me haha.
This summer I was actually able to sit down and wach a lot of anime since I had my wisdom teeth removed. I took a few days off work and didn't feel up to doing much else. Plus I planned to do not much else but eat pudding and watch anime for a whole month before the ordeal. Even after I still watch more and actually finished some things.

Side note, I'm actually going to Japan and being a total nerd there in June. So people should give me anime reccs to watch before I go .3.

Wishianalso the other night I searched out the busou renkin anime… I think I watched it a long time ago, but now that I'm older and
nerdierwiser I recognize most of the VAs and wanted to hear what it sounded like
conclusion 1: jun fukuyama is in everything and I don't know how I'd never heard his name until this year
conclusion 2: please never watch the busou renkin dub. my amusement at hearing hubert oswell's voice in an anime did not make the rest of it worthwhile. it cannot be made worthwhileI'm getting to the point where I'm starting to recognize a lot of VAs in stuff, too. I probably should have brought this up earlier, but I'm definitely recognizing a lot of voices in One-Punch Man, especially VAs who have also been in JoJo. Like, Carnage Kabuto is voiced by old Joseph, Hammerhead is voiced by Okuyasu (Who also voiced Knuckle in HxH), and the mosquito girl from episode 2 was Jolyne. I didn't notice at first, but it also looks like Sonic has the same voice actor as Johnny.
i'm kinda wondering if we could do a group anime session and start up baccano!

durarara!! is flawless, and so stylish!! imo it's hard not to get drawn into it, even though the storytelling is a little confusing. trust me, it gets easier over time…
and the whole thing is set up in a way that if you fully understand the characters fully at the start, there are things that could be spoiled :0I'm already curious about the structure because it's like
episode 1: some weird stuff happens
episode 2: episode 1, but with explanatory narration!mostly it's a little odd for me because I think everything else I've been into lately has a pretty small cast, and then drrr already has a bunch of characters in the first two episodes… I trust I will learn them all in due time but for now I've already forgotten all but three names lol

it's just so strange and slightly miraculous to get to this point and look something up and realize you've actually been listening to a voice you know??
the more I listen around, I'm not surprised I never recognize jun fukuyama because I know him mostly from noragami and I guess that role is just a deeper voice than he usually plays, but then like… I got halfway through tales of hearts before I realized hiroshi kamiya is in it and he doesn't even sound any different ;(
durarara is just the continuation of me half-accidentally watching everything miyuki sawashiro is in -

it's really odd but it picks up later on, too.and the great thing about durarara!! is that you can get away with only really focusing on a few major characters, and taking them at face value. reading into what's going on and getting to know the more minor characters is helpful and all, but it's really fun just going along with the ride. x3

WishianWell, I finished Franken Fran. It took me a while, since I was only reading one or two chapter at a time, and I actually stopped reading for a while and only picked it up again in the weeks leading up to Halloween. I find it kind of odd that it ended where it did, since it seemed like the author was kind of on roll when she decided to stop. It didn't really seem to be winding down at all, although I guess that's probably because it's completely episodic.
I have to say, the Sentinel chapters were probably one of my favourite takes on superheroes in any media. Each chapter takes the concept in such a weird and unexpected direction, and I kind of wish there was more.
As for what manga I'm going to be reading next, I'll probably start My Hero Academia at some point, since I've heard it's good and it's apparently going to be getting an anime next year. Might as well get started before there's too much of a backlog.
By the time I'm done with that, the One-Punch Man anime will probably have finished, so I'll move on to the manga. And then after that, it will probably be either Kaiji or Monster.

WishianYOOOOOO apparently in the newest chapter of Berserk, they finally get off the boat. This is actually a big deal, it's literally been years. Almost a decade, I think.

Honestly, although I like boat jokes as much as the next guy, I don't really find it as egregious as some people do. Sure, when you look at how long ago the chapter where they get on the boat was published it sounds ridiculous, but people act like we were treated to 30 volumes of Guts sitting on a boat. The reality was more like ~70 chapters, the majority of which focused on characters that weren't on the boat. Even the chapters on the boat tended to involve character development or fighting sea monsters. Although maybe that's because I only got into Berserk like two years ago, instead of before they got on the boat…
That being said, the pinnacle of the series is still the Golden Age and Conviction arcs, and I can't see that changing soon.

WishianIt should be interesting.. to use hxh as a comparison, i think the chimera ant arc is an absolute masterpiece.. but i feel like if it came out of hiatus and really got going again, the future plots have at least enough potential (at least enough world-building) to blow the chimera ant arc out of the water.
it would be hard to make a series float with just boat puns… but oh buoy. i woodn't go there. that said, if i was writing a story about people on a boat i would still seas the opportunity. especially if my fans wanted it. more often than knot, i drown under pier pressure…

Yeah… honestly Hunter x Hunter manages to get better with each arc, and although I think the Chimera Ant arc is pretty much perfect in almost every way, I do think the Dark Continent arc has the potential to be even better with all of the tantalizing plot threads that have been set up.
That being said, I believe the Chimera Ant arc was around where the hiatuses started happening. I suppose you could argue that Togashi needed more time to plan out the story, and that it wouldn't have turned out as well as it did if he was turning in chapters on a weekly basis.
Nine chapters in three years leaves a lot of time for brainstorming, though…it would be hard to make a series float with just boat puns… but oh buoy. i woodn't go there. that said, if i was writing a story about people on a boat i would still seas the opportunity. especially if my fans wanted it. more often than knot, i drown under pier pressure…
I am actually kind of surprised that (to my knowledge) no one has made any Berserk videos using “I'm on a Boat”. Like, not even editing the characters faces into the music video or anything.

WishianNobody at all? That sounds like a challenge. Let's do it.
You see similar patterns in other shounen manga too actually…. there have been several stages where One Piece has gone on a planning break right in the middle of a major climactic part. Much to the fans' disdain, but ultimately for the better of the series.
HxH is so frustrating, and I know I vent my frustrations too often lol.
but the quality of plot development and world building during that brief period was so, so good. All its done is make me want more. Arrgghh

WishianWow, so much good anime news lately.
Obviously, there was the awesome Diamond is Unbreakable PV this weekend, which is honestly more than I was expecting considering how short and simple the Stardust Crusaders's Jump Festa PV was. I almost can't wait for April, because I keep thinking of all the great parts I want to see animated.
And we also got confirmation that the Ace Attorney anime will be covering the first two games, which means we'll get to see Pearl and Franziska animated awww yeah.
And now it turns out there's another Berserk anime project in the works (unfortunately, this means the manga is going back on hiatus again…). They've even specified that it will involve Guts as “the black swordsman”, which means we're not just going to get the Golden Age arc animated again. Like, I love the Golden Age arc too, but I might actually love the Conviction arc even more and I'm really really hoping that that's what they're hinting at.
They might be talking about the Black Swordsman arc, but it seems kind of… unnecessary at this point. It's very short, and mostly serves the purpose of introducing Guts. Doing it after Golden Age is also kind of a dumb idea, since a lot of it hinges on Guts leaving a strong first impression and leaving us wanting to know about the mysteries of his past, which you can't do anymore because they've already adapted his backstory twice. Other than needing to properly introduce Puck, I don't see why they would need to devote much time to it.
I really hope that they are planning on doing the Conviction arc, and not just the Lost Children portion, because as good as that part is what really pushes it over the top for me is everything after it. Like, I just really really love Farnese, and I want to finally see her animated beyond that like two second cameo in one of the movies.
I've been saying this a lot but I think 2016 is going to be a pretty great year. All we need is for Hiatus x Hiatus to come off hunter and it will pretty much be perfect.

WishianNew chapter of JoJolion was really good.
My theories about the Rock Humans being involved in some kind smuggling operation involving the Rokakaka, as well as whatever happened to Kira and Josefumi possibly being a result of them knowing too much, are just about confirmed. I'm still unsure about how the Higashikatas are involved, though. I can understand why they would want some fruit for the sake of curing the disease, but they seem to be at the centre of this business.
I'm really eager to learn more about Josefumi and how he gets involved in all of this, as well as his potential past connection with Kira. I'm also really curious about Damo, since he's only explained one of his three motives. In terms of his Stand, the fact that they're now explicitly describing its ability as making things “soft” makes me think it's in some way connected to Spice Girl.
Still waiting on the new chapter of Berserk to be translated.

I have to say that I liked the beginning more than the end, but I'm pretty sure that's mostly because celty and shinra are by far my favorite characters (surprise!!) and it felt like they showed up a lot less in the second halfi don't know whether i want to ship anri with celty or have celty and shinra adopt herI was considering a rewatch to get a better grip on everything but I'm impatient and will probably go right on to the next season, after I go back and watch the bonus episodes
though tbh when I rewatch it I might watch the dub, I've listened to some clips of it just for fun and it didn't sound terrible… just harder to take seriously because almost all of the voice actors have been in Tales Of games and I can't stop comparing them -

WishianWell, I'm finally up-to-date on My Hero Academia. It's pretty good. Really good character development, and a nice cast of characters with a lot of cool designs. As great as it is waiting for new JoJo every month, it's nice to be following a weekly shonen series again.
The competition for Best Girl is amazingly fierce, and although Tsuyu seems to be the most popular, I'm going to come out and say that Ashido is seriously underrated. Iida is still best overall character, though.
Also, God bless Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu for existing. His entire character is just a punchline, and his name is intentionally as stupidly literal as physically possible. It's amazing.
I'll probably be following the anime once it starts airing. It's weird, I'm not watching anything this season, but I've already got three shows on my list for Spring (JoJo, Ace Attorney adaptation, and this).

WishianI've basically managed to arrange my morning schedule so that I can read two chapters of manga before I go to school each day. Right now I'm reading Monster, and it's really good. I'm at the part where there's a guy named “The Baby” and the main villain is compared to both Hitler and Jesus in a single chapter.
I don't like it quite as much as 20th Century Boys, though. It might be because I'm crawling through it at a snail's pace, whereas with 20CB I had enough free time to read a volume a day, but it still hasn't quite grabbed me as much. There's still a lot left for me to read though. Inspector Lunge is a great character too.

WishianScans of the new chapter of JoJolion are very late this month.
On the bright side, the more we wait this month, the less we have to wait until next month's chapter.
I haven't actually been watching much anime lately, but whenever I get around to starting up again I'm planning on watching Cardcaptor Sakura (For nostalgia reasons. Plus, I only ever watched the dub before) and giving the Monogatari series a try (I've always been vaguelly aware that it existed, and what little I know about it seems interesting). In addition to that, there are at least 3 new shows that I'm going to be following next season so…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VnLY_iQxGUBut seriously, I forgot that Berserk might be coming off hiatus again in a few months. Apparently Hunter x Hunter will be coming off hiatus sometime soon as well (not sure if I should trust this, but apparently there will be more details in the next Shonen Jump). Also, Diamond in Unbreakable PV in about a week, and then the anime premiers less than two weeks after that. There's a lot to look forward to.

WishianThe anime of part 4 of JoJo starts tomorrow! I'm hyped.
AWWWW YEAH
The first episode was great. I especially liked the first scene with the sort-of early Kira cameo, as well as the way they added silhouettes of some of the characters into the crowd at the end. I've persuaded some of my friends into watching JoJo, and I'm going to be watching the episode again with them tonight.
The Ace Attorney anime was also pretty good. So far I wouldn't say it's a good substitute for the games, but it's really fun seeing everything animated. I really can't wait to see more.
The opening was pretty meh, but the ending with Maya was really good and really cute.

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING
I am glad they remembered that Phoenix does not have a driver's license, and took advantage of that fact to show him awkwardly riding a bike as much as possible.
Also, Dahlia's sweater showing up in the first scene.
And most importantly, Gumshoe next week.

I saw this a couple months ago, and I totally agree. I binge watched the entire thing and I think I need to go and watch it again.
I'm also watching Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works], (Can't get enough of Rin tbh) and now I'm really really impatient and I can't wait for Heaven's Feel. WishianSo how about yesterday's new JoJo episode? It was really good, but I was mostly excited about seeing the opening. I really liked it and it got me super excited for all the characters that I can't wait to see. Based on my estimates, we're only about two months away from Tonio. Can't wait!
Seeing these early episodes also reminds me of how… weirdly dark early Part 4 is. People talk a lot about the drastic art shift, but the change from villains like Angelo and Hazamada to plots about invisible babies and rock paper scissors is pretty weird as well, Kira notwithstanding.
I really liked the new Ace Attorney episode as well. I like how they're not sticking too rigidly to the source material and are actually doing their own thing in some parts, like trying to contrast Phoenix and Edgeworth right off the bat. I especially liked the scene where Maya agrees to let Phoenix defend her. Just seeing the massive list of names he's crossed out as well as how wet and dirty he is from going around all day trying to find another attorney makes her realize just how much he cares… And then them both being massive dorks about it. It's so good. That and Phoenix ungracefully sneaking into April's hotel room.
Also whoops, I forgot to watch the new episodes of Ushio and Tora and the first episode of My Hero Academia. I should get on that.
As for manga, I finished reading Monster about a week ago and am now reading Kaiji. It's really good so far.

WishianYo, Hunter x Hunter has been back for two weeks and its pretty good so far. First chapter continued on from where it last left off, but was really just more and more set-up. I really like a lot of the stuff that's going on, and the plot is getting very interestingly complex, but it does feel like things need to get moving a bit. I can't wait for the expedition to actually start.
But the new chapter is where all my hype comes from. Chrollo vs. Hisoka right off the bat. Out of nowhere. I mean, this fight has been in the making for years, but I wasn't expecting it to just happen like that. Can't wait to see more.

apparently there's actually another story (more like a spinoff I think?) set another two years in the future?? I want to look into that but I haven't had a lot of luck finding stuff out about the recent light novels/manga, since the english translations are so far behind…so now I need something else to watch, even though I would like to revel in drrr a little longer… I guess I could finally start Brotherhood? I can also finally start catching up with noragami, it turns out the ebisu arc wasn't quite the same in the manga as the anime so I have an actual incentive to continue it (besides the three volumes of the next arc that I've bought and haven't even opened,,,)

WishianI'm really enjoying the new chapters of Hunter x Hunter. Like, I never knew that I needed Hisoka using a severed head as a weapon before, but now that I have it I'm so glad it exists. I'll probably have to read all of this fight again once it's over, because there's so much to keep track of that it's hard to follow with a week in between each chapter.
Now that I've actually got lots of free time, I'll be able to actually watch those shows I've been saying I'll watch for a while now. First though, my priority is to watch the 97 Berserk anime. I haven't actually seen it before, but I thought it would be a good refresher on the Golden Age arc since the anime of the Conviction arc is starting in July.
I CAN'T WAIT THIS IS MY FAVOURITE ARC FARNESE CAN SET ME ON FIREI also recently watched the Trails in the Sky OVA and it was… kind of a mixed bag. I mean, the most obvious handicap is that there is simply no way to compress 80 hours worth of story into 80 minutes, but beyond that there are some pretty good individual scenes. Like, the fight against Bleublanc was great. They captured pretty much everything about Olivier perfectly. I think Loewe telling Estelle about Hamel was handled pretty well too. Also, Agate throwing Tita like 20 feet in the air to get her to safety.
But even beyond the understandable timing limitations, some of the omissions are pretty bad. Like, the removal of Weissmann pretty much makes Joshua's entire character not make any sense. The way Renne was written also seemed odd to me, like even beyond the complete absence of her more sadistic dialogue the way she reacts to Estelle seemed off. Estelle's speeches were also quite a bit weaker than they were in the games.
It's kind of one of those things where I guess I recommend it as light fanservice for people who have already played the games, but not even remotely adequate as a substitute for the games themselves.

Also, I'm still reading Kaiji, and I have never before seen a fictional character get as thoroughly demolished as Ootsuki. Holy shit, that was incredible.

WishianITALIAN RESTAURANT EPISODE OF JOJO TOMORROW
finally I will get to see Josuke punching a plate of spaghetti gloriously animatedThe day has finally come and it was beautiful. I really don't know what else I can say, that episode was perfect.
I also finished the second series of Kaiji and wow. It kind of felt like it was really really dragged out (he was playing pachinko for what, forty straight chapters?), but there were so many twists thrown into just a single game that it was ridiculously suspenseful throughout. Like, you're constantly thinking, “It has to be over soon, right?” but then nope. It was really intense, and I look forward to the third series.

WishianI know I say this about basically every episode, but the Rohan Kishibe episodes of JoJo were SO GOOD. I'm loving the new opening, too.
Agreed. Every time there's an episode I've been excited for, it's managed to exceed my expectations. The new OP was also a nice surprise, since I wasn't expecting one until Kira shows up.
And honestly, although I am excited that Rohan is here and I can't wait for pretty much every fight he's involved in, I'm even more excited about Kira because all the visuals in the new OP keep reminding me that it's almost time.
In other happy news, Pearl has finally appeared in the Ace Attorney anime and she's probably even more adorable than I was anticipating. And then Franziska next week, aww yiss.
Less positively, the new Berserk anime has been kind of disappointing so far. I don't seem to hate it as much as most people do, but I will admit it's not great. It's really frustrating too, because a lot of the traditionally animated stuff looks really good and it just makes the CGI that much more jarring by comparison. Also, from the looks of the next episode preview, it's going to be branching out a bit into some original content, and some people speculate that it's to work around two upcoming scenes that wouldn't fly on television. I was expecting less censorship since iirc this is airing on WOWOW, but so far that doesn't seem to be the case. I still kind of like it though, there are good parts, and I guess bad CGI PG-13 Farnese is better than no Farnese…

Wishianwhy does netflix keep suddenly taking down anime I want to watch
I was only a quarter of the way through Brotherhood and it disappeared… I have found somewhere else to watch it of course but it doesn't have the ops/eds on every episodeI'd really forgotten most of the first anime, the characters and general plot stuck with me but the rest of it all feels new. the beginning felt very fast too, but I guess maybe it's aimed at people already familiar with the material?
I'm enjoying it well enough though, the classically-anime over-the-top humor and drama has never appealed to me much on a personal level but I still like the characters a lotand I'm ready to be thrown in roy/riza hellI'm also getting a lot closer to being caught up with noragami, which I really hope will happen soon because Vague Spoilers are killing me

I TAKE THIS BACK THEY ACTUALLY KEPT IN ALMOST ALL OF THE STUFF PEOPLE THOUGHT THEY MIGHT CUT

Though I love Farnese's character regardless. Also, I finished series 3 of Kaiji a while ago and only recently got around to starting series 4 and I'm freaking out about Kazuya. Like, I was expecting him to be a sadistic bastard, considering who his father is and that “repayment” plan he had for Kaiji, but its so much worse than I thought. Like, just right off the bat he starts with this stuff, it threw me off guard. They haven't even started the game yet, and he's already escalated it to this point…

WishianI passed episode ~20 of brotherhood and I am a little confused about all of these “revelations”
maybe I'm confusing facts here/remembering stuff wrong (from this show or the last one) but I don't get why they're so concerned about the human transmutation not working? I thought it was a given that it did not recreate their mother… I know it's kind of weird that what they did create was so far off, but like, not an earth-shattering weird, we already knew it failed
and ed's sudden insistence that he can pull al's body back from the gate… where did that come fromI also feel like al latches on to other people's suppositions awfully quickly… when barry was talking about souls not sticking to bodies I thought he meant in cases like his own body, which is obviously pretty messed up, not that ALL soul transfers (even onto inanimate objects) would eventually go wrong. but they're all accepting it as true facts so idk if I'm just being too skeptical…
Netflix didn't even have the entirety of Brotherhood when the bf and I watched it last…got through season 4 and it was like “welp that's it y'all hope you didn't want to watch the entire last season”
huh, I wonder if they ever put it up then… I noticed it said multiple parts but I never checked to see if it was all of them. they do roll some seasons out pretty slowly but fma was up forever
but at least when they took noragami off they put up a date for it. I never saw one on brotherhood, it just disappeared #rudespeaking of noragami, the manga killed me. bye everyone

I'm really confused about the title of the next episode though. I have no idea what it could be referring to… It's at least a two-parter too, which is even more baffling. My first thought was anime-original filler, but based on how many episodes are left and the pacing of the past few episodes that doesn't sound possible.

I guess that makes sense… I had completely forgotten that they took place on the same day. I just didn't want to believe it, because that must have been one rough day for Josuke. It seems weird to me though, since I Am an Alien and Highway Star ended up overlapping but they were still titled separately. Maybe they'll try to fit in My Dad Is Not My Dad too, since it's way to short to be its own episode.

WishianWell, the anime of JoJo Part 4 wrapped up. It really was pretty great! I didn't expect it to be quite this good before it started airing. I'm really hoping that they'll announce the anime of Vento Aureo pretty soon, because I'm really looking forward to that.
Although Parts 5 and 6 tend to be kind of low on my rankings, meaning with Part 4 done I'm mostly just praying for Steel Ball Run within the next decade, I'm actually kind of interested in the possibility of a Vento Aureo anime. Obviously the issue with Part 5 is the quality of the English translation, so I'm really interested in an opportunity to experience it fresh. I don't know if a new translation will significantly boost my opinion of it, but I've read a lot of interesting commentary on it and there are definitely times when I read it where I was thinking “Man, this would probably be really cool if I could understand what he's trying to say.”
Now that I've checked actually, the re-translation effort is a lot further along than I thought it was. I don't know if I'll get around to re-reading it, or will just sit around hoping for an anime to happen.
As for what I'm watching now… I still haven't picked up any shows for this season yet, but I've been planning to start watching the Monogatari series again. After starting it in September and picking it up again during the Christmas break, I've been meaning to continue after finally figuring out which season to watch when, but since most of my free time now is going towards video games I just can't find an opportunity. I was able to finish Nekomonogatari (Black), and I'm definitely looking forward to more Hanekawa. It looks like a Hachikuji-centered arc is coming up too, which great because she's my favourite character.
Also damn, those new chapters of Kaiji…
I mean, I guess he was due for a loss, but I genuinely thought he was going to pull it off. One of the things I love with this series is that its one of the very few where things could genuinely go either way. Like, Kaiji pulling a ridiculous victory out of his ass and an absolute crushing defeat are both equally likely outcomes at any given moment, and its so nerve-wracking.But what I'm concerned about is where does it go from here? It's not just a matter of Kaiji being broke, its that we're only four volumes into an arc. It's still too early for a conclusion. From what I understand, the scans are still quite a bit behind, and new arc hasn't started yet, so I have no idea what could happen to keep this arc going.

WishianI read Steel Ball Run (part 7 of JoJo) again every year around my birthday, so I just started for this year. It's still absolutely fantastic. I really love it.

Wishianat the convention this year I traded some old volumes of naruto I almost forgot I had for some old volumes of fma. unfortunately the lowest one I got was 4, so I probably won't actually read them until I can start at the beginning…
my crowning achievement though is that I got the 5th volume signed by caitlin glassI actually had kind of forgotten she was winry, since I was there to see her for her other roles, but it was a marvelous coincidence that I had my new fma books on me at the time. so I got it basically for free and already increased its value by like 500% >:3c
I also picked up the first couple durarara light novels, but I'm still very slowly working through the manga, so that might take me a while to start too

WishianI finally got around to watching Gurren Lagann, and I just finished the first season. It was pretty decent, but apparently the second half of the series is when it starts to really get good, so I'm looking forward to that.
Also, the trailer for the new Castlevania anime looks really cool. I might have to watch that.

Can confirm. Been watching this since the original Japanese release, and the second season is even better than the first. That's not saying the first season isn't good, but the second is even better.

WishianI've been meaning to watch Gurren Lagann for a while. I've also been thinking of trying to get into some mecha series, so I guess I'll get around to that sooner rather than later.
I actually don't have too big of a backlog right now, but I've been spending all of my time working on my video game backlog, ha ha… Case in point, I've been about halfway through the second season of the Monogatari series for months now. Both parts of Nekomonogatari were great, Kabukimonogatari was kinda eh (nowhere near enough Hachikuji), and Otorimonogatari was really good. At first it kind of seemed like they were rehashing parts of Hanekawa's arc with Nadeko, but then it went in a completely different direction in a way that surprised me. I'm actually kind of happy about how it played out, because before this she had easily the least development out of all the girls. Ideally I can get mostly caught up before the new season starts.
Beyond that, I've really enjoyed the last few chapters of JoJolion. I do kind of miss the earlier days back when everything was enjoyably cryptic and every weird reveal just led to even further questions that just kept you guessing, but it is nice that we now have a much more clear path towards how this is going to wrap up. My money is on Kaato as the main villain… her or some higher ranking Rock Human we haven't met yet. I already really like the plant appraiser, very few characters can make such a good first impression. I am kind of upset that we're dealing with everyone running away from a long-range remote stand again, though. It was kind of refreshing at first, but now almost every fight is like that.
Berserk is also on a consistent schedule and the recent chapters have been fantastic, and Hunter x Hunter is apparently coming back next month. Nice.

WishianI finished watching Gurren Lagann.
I really enjoyed it. The second season was definitely my favorite, and the character development was great. My one complaint was that the ending was a little disappointing for me, but overall, I'd totally recommend it. -

WishianI watched Gunbuster this past weekend, and it was great. It genuinely gets better with each episode. Like, the first two episodes were kind of eh, the next two episodes were really good, and then the last two episodes were incredible.
My only complaints are that weaker beginning and that they could have set some stuff up more. It's not even like the first episodes aren't as good because they're build up for the fantastic back half, since they really don't feed into each other that much, even as starter episodes they weren't as strong as they could have been. They also could have spent more time setting stuff up and adding more details. It feels like they gloss over a lot of things, especially concerning Gunbuster itself.
Still, despite that the series' high points are just so damn good (like holy shit) and it ends on such a satisfying note. I really enjoyed it.
I also really liked their attempts to bring some hard science in to it. I can't exactly vouch for the accuracy of all of it since some of it is either fictional science or outside my expertise, but it all feels real and convincing and they invoke a lot of real concepts. The use of time dilation in particular is accurate and really well integrated into the story.
Since I know Falcom apparently puts a lot of mecha references that go completely over my head into Trails, I'm starting to wonder if Double Buster Cannon is named after Double Buster Collider…I'm planning on following it up with Diebuster next weekend, and then from there I'll move on to Gurren Lagann at some point. I also eventually need to get around to watching the Kizumonogatari movies.

WishianDid I mention I'm now current with Berserk? The manga, not the anime. God damn this manga is good.
I've also been watching KonoSuba as of late. I'm enjoying it quite a bit!
In the spring and summer I've also watched all of the Monogatari series, and I'm absolutely in love with it. The last couple of seasons were starting to drag a bit after the Sodachi arc, but the ending made up for all of it, it was incredible. Also, Monogatari Second Season when taken alone might just be in my top three anime of all time; it's that good.

It's not too long, about 39 volumes right now. Berserk has been around for nearly thirty years, but it goes on hiatus a lot so its not hard to get caught up. Definitely read the manga rather than watch the anime, since the manga has incredible art whereas the recent anime series is plagued by really cheap CGI.

I love KonoSuba too!

I actually picked up the series around the same time and I really enjoyed it too. I thought the ending was fantastic as well. Apparently the novels continue on, but I honestly thought Owarimonogatari ends on such a perfect note both narratively and thematically that I don't know where you could go from there.
Which arc in Second Season was your favourite? I really liked both parts of Nekomonogatari and the twist in Otorimonogatari, but I think Koimonogatari might be my favourite section of the series.
