Wishian. chapter one .“ It was hot.
moss opened their eyes groggily, then sat up in bed and swept brown hair from their sticky face with a frown. Outside, moss could hear crickets chirping and, every so often, a faint whinny from one of the unicorns. Summer was in full swing these days, but usually it wasn't so hot they couldn't sleep.
Then moss wondered why they could hear the crickets and not the soothing rumble of the A/C. With a groan, it hit them. The power was out.
Sighing heavily, moss slid out of the overheated bed and padded across the cool wood floor. The breaker box was all the way in the basement and they weren't looking forward to the trip – new houses were weird, and basements were always creepy. They stopped in the hall and pulled a flashlight out of the table drawer, flicking it on. Its faint yellow glow wasn't super useful, but still a comfort as they went downstairs to the first floor and stared warily at the basement door.
When moss opened the door, a cool breath of air swept around their bare ankles and they shivered. It felt nice, at least. They pointed the flashlight down and descended the stone steps, crossing the dusty floor to the breaker box. Quickly, moss flipped the breaker, and waited a moment until the hum of the air conditioning started. “Stupid house,” they muttered. “Why did it go out in the first place?”
They headed upstairs and closed the basement door. moss's cat, Pi, sniffed curiously at it, then growled and trotted away. “Same,” moss responded. They didn't take their time on the way back to the bed, which had cooled to an acceptable temperature, and quickly slid under the covers and went to sleep. They were just glad to be out of the basement.
***
moss sat at their desk in the Town Hall, drumming their fingers on the wood. They felt exhausted and grouchy; after the house's little power stunt last night, their sleep had been light and restless and the early hours of another day on the job didn't help any.
Formally, moss was the village's detective, but that didn't pay well for a tiny town with little crime or mystery, so they had also taken up a job working with the post office and filing in the Town Hall. This way, they could actually afford to feed Pi the fancy cat food, but didn't give up their sleuthing career.
“Hey, moss!” came a friendly chirrup as the door opened. Heat blasted through the building and ruffled papers on desks. “How's it going? Any packages?”
“Morning, Splashy,” moss responded, taking the coffee the messenger offered. “You're chipper, as usual. The mail's on the bench over there.”
“Are you doing okay?” Splashy asked as she swept envelopes into her bag. Her finger slipped, and she hissed before sucking it into her mouth. “You look kinda…”
“Tired? Yeah. I couldn't sleep last night. The power went out, and it was hotter than the depths of…oh, something.” moss sipped their coffee and held out a band-aid. “Here. Stop slobbering, it's unsanitary.”
“Thanks!” Splashy folded the band-aid around her paper cut and sipped her sickeningly sweet latte. “Mmm, caffeine. Oh! You're not the only one with sleeping troubles. Tiny said her cat was up all night scratching at the walls! Haha, cats are weird. Okay, I gotta go! See you later!” The raven-haired girl disappeared out the door with a full satchel bouncing on her hip.
moss furrowed their brow, then smiled. Tiny had always said her cat was bizarre. However, they weren't looking forward to how grumpy she'd be when they went to the cafe for lunch. Sleep was important to that one.
“Jingle!” moss called out. After a moment of silence, “Jinglepie!”
“What?” A head with a burst of ombre hair peeked out of the back room. “I'm trying to finish the new logo for the paper.”
“Splashy's brought us coffee.” They held up another cup in a small hand. “And what was wrong with the old logo?”
Jingle trotted up to the front of the room and took a sip of coffee before answering. “Well, we lived in a city environment then. No valleys, no forests, and definitely no Moon Lake. So logos need to reflect that. Hey, do you want to go swimming later?”
moss raised an eyebrow. “The fact that we can swim in something named after a sacred place is unsettling. But yes.” As if in response, a low rumble murmured across the sky, and moss stood to look out the window. “Hm. I guess we aren't swimming today.”
After a moment's pause, the soft hiss of rain began flooding through Wish Village. The droplets bounced like crystals off the cobblestone roads, washing away the sticky heat of a summer morning. moss watched a pair of people in the street turn their faces to the sky in surprise. They sighed and stared a bit longer at what they could see of the town from their window – squat, charming buildings and light posts that ran on oil. This place was different, that was for sure. But, moss decided as they returned to their desk, there wasn't anything wrong with that.
***
“Well, I don't get it,” came the cross voice from inside the cafe kitchen. “These ovens were just installed. This is ridiculous. What's the guy's number?”
“Maybe it's something else,” another person said, far more gently. “Splashy said that moss's power went out last night. Maybe something's wrong with the electricity.”
“The lights are on, Dust. What could be wrong with the electricity?”
moss sidled up to the bar/counter with their list of orders, casting a glance from Heat to the grumbling in the kitchen. He shrugged and ate another chip from the bag he was holding. “The ovens aren't working and Tiny's really pissed about it. What cold or non-heated foods can I get for ya?”
Tiny scrambled out of the kitchen, red-faced and frowning. Dust followed, looking significantly calmer as she pushed her red hair behind her ears. “Sorry, moss,” Dust said as she took the orders. “No chicken alfredo pizza for Jingle today. Sorry.” Even with two sorry's, she still looked apologetic.
“Yeah, no pizza at all,” Tiny huffed dramatically, before flopping into a rolling chair and sliding across the cafe.
moss blinked. “Sandwiches or something are fine too. We're not picky.” The gray-eyed girl smiled appreciatively and headed back into the kitchen to make the food.
“Is anyone else less than enthused about this move?” Tiny asked as she rolled herself back in the pair's direction. “I mean, I'm glad we're lively and have new members again, but…moving. It's awful. And the people we bought this building off of were really weird. I never actually saw them.”
“Well, there are loads of boxes still stacked up in the Town Hall,” moss conceded, grimacing as they thought about it. “But it's only been a week since everyone moved. I think you'll like it if you give it some time.”
“Yeah, I guess you're right.” Tiny swept her pink hair out of her face and joined Dust in the kitchen to help.
“So what have you been doing, Heat? I don't usually see you here this early.” moss reached over the counter and stole a chip from his bag.
The boy shrugged. “Tiny said that all my volunteer hours couldn't come from bartending, because she knows I take liquor. Whether that is true or not is up to you.” Heat grinned, then balled up the empty bag and threw it in the trash.
“Here you go!” Dust said, bringing two bags of food to the counter. moss handed her the money and told her to keep the change, earning another smile. “Enjoy, moss. Thanks.”
“Sure,” moss responded, hefting the bags. “I hope your ovens get fixed soon. See you.” They stepped back into the cloudy street, the rain having tapered off into a misty drizzle. moss took in a deep breath of the sweet-smelling air and set off down the street with their jacket hood up. Another lovely day in a brand new Wish.

Wishian. chapter two .“ “Come on, we haven't got all day! It's getting hot!”
Scary glanced up from his phone, rolling his eyes. Heat was bouncing from foot to foot, nervously patting at the small amounts of sweat shining on his face. “Well, if you'd calm down, maybe you wouldn't be sweating,” he retorted before putting his phone away. Next to Heat stood Splashy and Holly; the former was equipped with a headlamp, which kept sliding down her face, a backup flashlight, and a whole backpack of snacks and drinks – “just in case!” she'd chirped. Holly had the first aid kit.
He joined the other three and began walking with them through town. They were headed for the “mountains,” where the river trailed away from the Moon Lake, up like a silver snake, until it reached the crest and disappeared. Scary was using mental quotations around mountains because they didn't seem nearly tall or steep enough to really be such; the tops of the giant hills weren't even sprinkled with snow. Although it was July.
Holly tugged a bit nervously at the blue tips of her ponytail, pulling it over her shoulder. “So you said there's a whole abandoned city up there?”
Scary frowned. “Well, I wouldn't really call it a city. More like a village. Like this.” He gestured at the buildings around them, looking like something from a different century. “But the caves are the interesting part!”
“Hem…why, exactly?” The short girl pulled at her plain cream-colored shirt as if it were suffocating her. “I mean, you barely told us anything when you invited us on this super cool mission.“
“Well, you didn't have to come,” Splashy responded, biting her lip. “Come on, Holly. Don't be such a downer – it'll be fun!”
“Look.” Scary turned from his place ahead of the trio and began walking backwards, trying to swallow his exasperation. “From what I've read in the library, the caves are supposed to be full of gems. There are whole books on it – and loads of other things – that were just left behind from the previous residents of this town.”
Holly mumbled something about it probably being left for a reason, but began to brighten when she realized she could sell whatever she found on Ebay.
“Morning, Scary!” someone called from behind him. The greeting startled the boy, and he nearly fell, but managed to catch himself before becoming a total embarrassment. When Scary turned, he saw Tiny and Altias. Tiny, who had called to him, was trying to stifle laughter behind her hand. The pair were sitting on a blanket under a tree, a picnic basket between them that was serving as a table for tarot cards.
“Hello,” he replied, walking over to them. Holly, Splashy, and Heat followed, looking at their setup curiously. “What are you two doing?”
“Altias is teaching me about tarot,” Tiny explained, nervously shuffling the cards. “And we're having breakfast. That part is going better.”
“You're doing fine,” they murmured, patting her arm. Altias looked over the others' attire and supplies. “Are you four going spelunking?” They raised an eyebrow, and Tiny snorted.
“Apparently,” said Holly.
“Yep!” Heat answered. “Well, I mean, maybe, if Scary would hurry up. There's apparently a gem-filled cave and an abandoned village up in the mountains! Do you want to come?”
Altias frowned and glanced at Tiny, who had actually recoiled. “Absolutely not,” she snapped.
“Why not?” Splashy whined.
“I don't mess with stuff like that. Abandoned buildings, haunted houses, Ouija boards, rural Mississippi, sketchy amusement parks – all off limits. Because I'm not dumb.”
The four adventurers exchanged a confused look.
“Yeah, I have to agree with Tiny,” Altias said finally. “It sounds creepy.”
“We'll just stay here and eat omelettes. And French toast.” Tiny took a long swig out of a ridiculously large bottle of orange juice and began opening the basket. Before Scary could wonder how she'd cook these items, she whipped out a portable hot plate. He considered that this breakfast they were having would've been much easier in one of their houses, then shrugged.
“Okay, suit yourselves. We'll see you later.” The pair waved goodbye as they continued on.
***
When they reached the abandoned village, the sun had risen much higher in the sky, and Heat had given up trying to stop sweating. Even Splashy looked a little miserable. Scary motioned them to the shaded porch of a decrepit building and sat down on the steps with a heavy sigh. He pushed off his backpack of caving gear and dug around for his water bottle. After taking a drink, he said, “Well, we're here.”
His voice echoed almost unnaturally around the empty area. It was then that he realized he hadn't heard anything since they'd arrived, not even the wind; however, the village was located in a dip surrounded by skeleton trees, hidden from the elements.
They sat for a while longer before Heat jumped to his feet. “Okay, team, let's go!”
“Wait,” Splashy said, hesitating before she stood. “Did you see that?” She pointed into the window of the house across from them.
“See what?”
“I think it's a cat in there!” Suddenly more energetic, she pushed back her damp hair, adjusted her headlamp, and marched across the faded street.
“Wait!” Holly scrambled to her feet and followed, flanked by Scary and Heat. “Splashy! It's just a cat!”
The messenger pressed up against the dusty glass and squinted. “What if it's hurt? Or starving?”
Heat muttered, “Then you can feed it and we'll all have our very own stray following us home.”
Splashy opened the door of the house with surprising ease. It led into a living room, dusty but mostly untouched; an armchair was tipped over and sat facing the wall, and a lamp was broken on the floor, but otherwise, the owners could've left yesterday. “Come on,” she urged. “I saw it in that window. It looked sad.”
Scary sighed, frustrated, but began looking anyway. He halfheartedly toed at the sheet covering the sofa and peeked around the corner, which led to a hallway. Scary walked down it, frowning at the musty smell and the fact that all the doors were ajar. The first one was a bathroom, too dark to see much in; the second a study, the desk a mess of books. He made a note to return to it when he heard a noise.
Scary whipped around. His three friends were still in the living room or just on the other side of the house. He swallowed hard and stepped closer to the third room, hand on his flashlight like it was a weapon. Why am I getting closer to the noise?! he wondered silently. There it was again – a rustling, then a softer, almost inaudible sound.
He steadied himself with a deep breath, ran his hand through his hair, and flung the door open wide. A startled yowl came from the bedroom, and then a black-and-white whirlwind came rushing at him.
The damn cat! Scary yelped as the feral beast attached itself to his leg, hissing and spitting and trying to climb him with both claws and teeth. Heat rushed down the hall, flabbergasted. “Scary! What did you do?”
Splashy crashed in after him, knocked him into the wall, and grabbed the cat with gloved hands. The cat growled and hissed, but couldn't escape the grasp, and Splashy gently dropped it into the room before almost totally closing the door. “Kittens,” she gasped. “The cat has kittens in there.”
“Splashy?” Scary asked, limping toward the living room.
“Mhm?”
“Where did you get gloves?”
“They were in my backpack! Just in case!” Splashy sat him on the armchair she'd stood up and began looking at his leg. “Wow, this cat just mauled you. Hey, Holly, we need the first aid kit.”
Once Scary had been appropriately disinfected and bandaged, he got to his feet and began heading toward the other edge of the town. He'd come this far, he thought, and going back home would be a total waste. And none of his friends would probably come again.
“Are you sure you want to keep going?” Heat asked, looking a little concerned as he jogged to catch up. “What if you have rabies?”
“I do not have rabies,” Scary grumbled. “That cat wasn't rabid, just freaked out. Nobody's been up here for years, it looks like.”
They traveled in silence, each one looking around every so often. The style of this village was fairly similar to their own; cobblestone streets, now choked with grass, stumpy buildings with cracked stone walls or decaying roofs. When Scary had begun to wonder just how long this place had been abandoned, Holly raised her arm and pointed into the mostly-dead foliage. “What is that?”
Between each skinny, wind-smoothed trunk of the trees, a soft blue light glowed. His heart began to race and he pictured the book he'd been reading – one page in particular had shown this scene. “That's the cave,” he whispered, and began marching through the trees. His friends clambered after him, determined to keep up.
The dead forest opened up onto a sandy clearing framed by a large outcropping of rock. It looked as though vines had once weaved their way like cobwebs over the stone, but they were gray and shrunken, like most other things here. There was a large split in the rock, like lightning had struck it open, and from it came the blue glow. Scary held back a gasp, trying to preserve the silence.
“Wow,” Splashy said finally. “I guess I won't be needing my headlamp.”
“No, keep it.” Scary stepped closer and peered inside. “I don't think it glows all the way in.” He flicked on his own flashlight, adjusted his backpack, and walked into the cave. Holly was the first to enter behind him, keeping a vice grip on her backpack straps, followed by Splashy, and Heat bringing up the rear. The ceiling of the cave cast blue light onto all of them, making them look ethereal and somewhat ghostly, and quickly it raised and the walls spread until it was a huge room of sorts.
“It feels good in here,” Holly commented.
Scary looked up at the ceiling of the cave, squinting to try and find the light source, but it was so bright now that he couldn't tell. “Well, the books said that the gems are found in the darkness, so we better keep going.”
The group trod deeper into the cavern. The temperature continued to drop, as it does in a cave, and he slowly became aware of a – no, several dripping noises. The air was thick with moisture that soaked into his clothes. Scary appreciated the cooling effect. It became darker and darker until it was totally impossible to see without a flashlight, although he could still sense a very faint glow from above, and he waved his light from one side to the other, hoping the white glow would land on the prize.
“Look!” he said, louder than he meant to, and everyone paused while the echo faded. Scary pointed his flashlight to a spot on the right wall near the bottom. A glittering cluster was illuminated, and upon closer inspection, it was definitely a gem. “Sapphire.”
“Emeralds over here,” Holly replied, her whisper carrying across the cave.
“Ooh, is this a diamond?” Splashy shouted. It wasn't a diamond.
Scary felt pride bubbling in his chest. He'd gotten what he came for, and his team's misgivings had disappeared! Ha. Take that, Tiny and Altias. Scary was a rich man now. They took their time in the cave, gently removing the gems, and when they realized that their bags were heavy enough they decided to leave.
“Wow, Scary,” said Heat, observing the chunk of colorless sapphire in his hand. “You know, I honestly didn't really think you were telling the truth when you asked us to come up here.”
“What? Why not?” he snapped. Scary fell back to walk next to him, frowning. Splashy and Holly hurried past them toward the blue glow, laughing and waving their flashlights.
“Well, it's just that you aren't always the pinnacle of sanity, and – “
Heat was cut off by a scream up ahead. They broke into a run, catching up to see Holly and Splashy staring up at the ceiling.
A sudden ominous feeling pressed onto Scary's chest. Swallowing hard, he followed their gaze up into the glow, but this time raised his flashlight as well. The section of blue his flashlight pointed at winked out, and then reappeared in a strange blinking rhythm. “Oh my god,” he said, realizing what exactly the light was.
“They're watching us,” Splashy whispered. “This cave is full of eyes.”

WishianOoh things definitely picked up in this chapter! Quite longer in comparison to the first one but, honestly, I like chapters that are more lengthy because it's more story.
Such a cliffhanger though. I hope everyone gets out all right; also your writing in general is really, really nice.

WishianI really love the descriptiveness in this bit:
Excellent chapter

Wishian. chapter three .“ Heat was the first to run.
The crystal he was holding slipped from his grip and clinked as it bounced across the floor. The noise jolted him from the pull of the eyes, and he darted out of the cave, his blood pounding in his ears. The ground dropped off slightly outside – he tripped and was sent tumbling down the slope into the trees. His friends followed, their breaths heaving gulps, and as Heat struggled to his feet, it seemed that Holly was on the verge of tears.
“What–” she began, voice trembling. “What was that?”
Scary shook his head. “We have to get out of here. This isn't right.”
Heat nodded in agreement and looked around again as they hurried out of the ghost town. The sun blazed still above them, but everything seemed dark and oppressive. The trees watched him, their bony arms raised to the sky. The houses' broken windows peered out from under their roofs, sagging porches a menacing frown. Everything was silent, but he could've sworn he was seeing things in the windows.
Once they had left the village, Heat immediately felt better, although a cold sweat was still dripping down his back underneath his bag. He pushed his way through knee-high grasses and shifted his backpack straps, then said, “What the hell did you do, Scary?”
The blond boy's head whipped around, eyes blazing with anger. “You think I knew what – what kind of crazy shi.t was in there? I was just trying to make some money with my friends!”
“You could've gotten us killed!” Heat fired back.
Scary's jaw tightened, but he just turned away. Splashy looked despairingly from one to the other. “It's nobody's fault,” she muttered. “We don't know that anything bad would have happened.”
Nobody responded. Heat blinked and turned his face up to the sun, hoping to burn out the image of hundreds of blue eyes watching him from his memory. The rest of the walk home was in silence.
When they arrived at the outskirts of Wish Village, Holly raised her arm and stopped them. “Wait,” she said firmly, looking less shaky than she had on the way. “I – I don't think we should tell everyone about this.”
“What do you mean?” Splashy asked, her eyebrows knitting together.
“Well, it's just…what would we even say? Oh, by the way, everyone, while we were stealing gemstones out of a creepy abandoned town, a bunch of eyes stared at us in a cave!” Splashy flinched at her friend's harsh tone. “As far as I'm concerned, nothing fuc.king happened. We went there, we got what we wanted, we left. Nothing bad happened so why talk about it?” Holly's brown eyes were set in a glare, as if daring someone to challenge her.
Heat pursed his lips. If he was honest with himself, he'd rather forget it happened, too. The amount of bad he had felt when he looked into the cave eyes was unimaginable and he didn't want to rehash it with everyone in town.
“Okay,” Scary said finally, giving a faint nod. “I won't tell if you won't.”
“Yeah,” Splashy mumbled. “Let's just forget it.”
Their eyes turned to Heat. “Yeah,” he echoed. “No memes about it, nothing. I'm…going to go get something to eat.” He could feel them watching him as he continued into town and headed for the cafe.
Heat had lied, sort of. He wasn't really going to the cafe to eat, but saying he was going there to drink sounded a little more alcoholic-y. When he opened the door, cool air heavy with the scent of something sweet – pie, maybe, or cheesecake? – rolled out onto him, and he eagerly stepped inside to sit at the counter.
Sunset light poured through the windows and turned the tips of Fireheart's hair golden orange as she peeked out from the freezer. “Hello, Heat! What can I get you?”
He froze in his position, leaning over the counter to pick out a bottle of tequila from underneath. “Oh, don't mind me. You can finish in there.”
Fireheart rolled her eyes and closed the freezer door, brushing frost from her apron. “I was done anyway.” She took the tequila bottle out of his hands and poured him a shot, pushing it in his direction. “What's the matter with you? You look…weird. And sunburned.” Heat glanced around at the people occupying most of the tables. Meadow scurried around, her blonde ponytail swishing as she gracefully refilled drinks while giving another table their check.
“Oh, I'm just…tired,” he said finally. “It was a long trip up into the mountains and back.”
“What did you go all the way up there for?” Fireheart asked. “Ooh, did you go to Sunset Falls?”
Heat shook his head. “Some gemstone gathering up in the mountains.” He unzipped his backpack and picked out a large ruby, weighing it in his hands before passing it to her.
“Wow!” Fireheart gasped, running her hands over the raw crystal. She attempted to hand it back to him, but he stopped her.
“Keep it,” he said. “A gift, from my lovely self.” In all honesty, he wasn't sure if he wanted the gems anymore. After what he'd seen today, it all just seemed wrong. He stood and headed for the door.
“Wait!” she called after him, sounding a little nervous. “I can't – I can't keep this! Heat!” But he was out the door and heading home, and she had a full café to tend to before Tiny appeared out of some pantry to do it for her. He looked up into the sky and sighed. What had they done?
***
BANG.
Heat sat up with a jolt, his mouth dry and body clammy. From somewhere distant in the house, he heard Yakiimo hiss. Was someone trying to break in? He sat, frozen, for another moment, wondering what to do.
BANG.
The sound was closer this time. Heat's hands tightened on the sheets. His phone could be anywhere in his tangle of bedding. His heart was pounding and he felt a numbness in his throat that was a mix between fear and the urge to vomit. Oh, God, what was he supposed to do?
BANG!
His bedroom door flew open and smashed into the wall. Heat jumped and slid to the other side of the bed. Through the darkness, it was hard to see anything, but he could tell there was no one there. Nobody had opened his door. As far as he could see. “Oh, f.uck,” he whispered.
There was a sense of heavy foreboding, suddenly, and Heat wondered briefly if he was going to die. The room felt icy and he found it hard to breathe. And then, as soon as it had started, it was gone. His chest loosened, but the fear was still there. The boy scrambled frantically for his phone and called Scary.
“H'lo?” came the Australian mumble from the other end.
“Scary, I – I – ” Heat grasped for words. What could he even say? “Something is wrong.”
“Huh?” Scary sounded more awake, and there was some rustling before he spoke again. “Heat, what's going on? Are you hurt?”
He lowered his voice and reached over the edge of his bed to grab his rapier. “Something is in my house,” he hissed.
“What? Call the police!” Scary shouted into the phone. Heat was already moving across the room, his fingers trembling as he flicked on the light. When nothing happened, he took a shaky breath.
“No, it's not…it's not like a burglar.” He flicked the light switch a few more times. The hilt of his rapier felt slippery and damp – it was his hands, he realized. “It's…something. Something bad. I'm really scared, dude.”
Heat could hear Scary's breathing on the other end. He clearly didn't know what to say. Ignoring him, Heat began slowly moving down the hall, his hair standing on end when Yakiimo flew by with her claws out and a low growl erupting from her. The breaker box was in the basement.
Heat stopped in the kitchen where the hall ended and watched Nine, his dog, pace back and forth in front of the sliding glass doors. She emitted a high-pitched whine that he hadn't heard before and, gripping his rapier tighter, he slowly stepped toward the door.
Outside, it was pitch black – a new moon. A few stars decorated the night sky like frost catching on inky-dark fur. His house, on the outskirts of town, usually flooded with rays of sunlight, but now it just stared out into the Morning Forest. Heat squinted, thinking he could see something – a soft hint of blue amongst the trees. Blue. His blood turned to ice.
BANG
“Fuc.k!” Heat shouted, whirling around. Scary jumped from the other end of the line.
“What was that?” he asked, breathless.
Another BANG echoed, still far away in the house. Heat looked over his shoulder; he was suddenly nervous about leaving his back exposed to the glass.
A face stared back at his: a mirror image, but with eyes the color of a frozen sea.
Heat screamed.
BANG. BANG. BANG BANG BANGBANGBANGBANG
Then, it was silent. Heat threw open the sliding glass door with such force that ribbons of cracks split into the glass, but he didn't care. He took off running, around the house, through the sparse trees, back toward civilization and streetlights. When he reached Scary's house, his breath was a heavy sobbing noise and he was fairly sure one of his feet was bleeding.
“Scary,” he shouted into the phone as he pounded on the door. “Scary, let me in!”
There was a sudden busy tone and he stared at the screen in disbelief. After a few more moments of shaky knocking, the door opened, and Scary stared at him. His hair was even messier than usual but his face was somber.
“That was Tiny,” he said. “Fireheart disappeared.”

Wishian. chapter four .very mild blood cw“ As per usual in a crisis, Tiny was freaking out.
She paced back and forth through the brightly lit café — usually, because she'd set it that way, the lights in the eating area were dimmed, but now she'd turned all of them as high as they could go. Early morning light was beginning to seep in through the cracks of the back door, yet she still felt shaky and afraid. She was dimly aware of Meadow watching her with wide eyes from the hostess stand.
A bell jingled, signaling the arrival of the people she'd been waiting for. Sunneth stepped inside first and was fiddling with her sheriff's badge as Mayor Darkstar entered behind her. “Morning,” he said, and began to look around.
“Morning? That's it?” Tiny responded, her tone dry.
Darkstar frowned, but Sunneth stepped in front of him and smiled weakly at the café owner. “I know you're freaking out right now, but let's all be friends here. Alright? Come sit down and we'll ask you some questions.” She patted at a patterned yellow booth.
Tiny sat and began pulling at a loose piece of plastic on a placemat. Her lungs felt like they were on fire and her vision was somewhat blurry. “Okay,” said Sunneth, who had pulled out a notepad, “when did you notice Fireheart was gone?”
The pink-haired girl noticed that she didn't seem to think Fireheart had just vanished, and her expression hardened. “It must've been about four-thirty. An hour ago. We had closed late, and we sat around talking for a while. Then I went to put up the pie we'd been eating, and when I came back, she was gone.”
Darkstar looked over his shoulder at the girl still standing nervously at the hostess stand, twirling her hair. “And where was Meadow?”
“The bathroom,” Meadow squeaked.
“Okay,” Sunneth said, writing furiously in her notepad. “Is anything of Fireheart's still here?”
“Nothing I could find.” Tiny shook her head. “Well…except this.” She pulled a large chunk of ruby out of her pocket and placed it on the table. “It was sitting in her chair when I came back.”
The sheriff and the mayor exchanged a confused look. “A ruby?” Darkstar asked. “Where did she get one that big?”
“I didn't even know she had it. She didn't say anything about it.”
“Well,” Sunneth sighed, pushing back her long brown hair. “That's about all we can ask you for now. You should both go home and get some rest.”
Meadow began gathering her things, but Tiny shook her head, even though she was stifling a yawn. “No, I need to stay. Scartail and Bladeh are working this morning, and they're both kind of new at it. I can't have the café burning down.”
***
Tiny had gone home, in the end. She'd only meant to change her clothes and contacts, and maybe fix her eyeliner, but she had lay down on the bed and suddenly it was 7 am, and her phone was ringing. She shot up and fumbled to answer it. “Hello?”
“Hi, uh, it's Scartail!” said the chipper but somewhat nervous voice. “We were just wondering if you were going to come today. It's, uh, we open soon.”
“Sh.it,” Tiny groaned. “Yeah, I'll be there ASAP. Sorry. Hold down the fort for me!”
“Wait – ” Scartail started, but Tiny hung up. She began throwing on a clean change of clothes and suddenly felt a sharp pain on her leg.
“Ow!” She stopped in her attempt to put on pants and looked down. On her thigh were four long red scratches; two were still oozing blood. Her mind rang with alarm. Where did these come from? Tiny looked around frantically, as if she'd find the source of the wound, but there was nothing there. “Maybe it was Tucker,” she said faintly, not really believing herself. There was no time to wonder about it. She slapped a Band-Aid on it and rushed out the door after a few more minutes.
She ran all the way to the café, beginning to regret it as she felt her hair stick to her neck. By that point, it was 7:15, and they opened in fifteen minutes. Scartail greeted her at the door. “Morning! We did everything we knew to do, but, uh, there might be some — “
Tiny blew past her with a nod and hurried into the kitchen. All the fruit was prepped, bread ready to be toasted, everything was spotless; they'd done a good job, even by her standards. She stepped to the sink to wash her hands. The morning rush was no joke.
A couple hours passed with no time for thinking about the weird scratches on her leg. Bladeh called out an omelette order for Jilda and Tiny pulled out the pan for it.
“Should I get the mango now?” Bladeh asked, looking at the knife she was holding.
“Yeah, might as well,” Tiny responded. “Before she asks for it.” Tiny left the eggs sizzling in the pan and headed to the fridge to get the fillings. She'd only just gathered up the cheese and vegetables when a horrid burning smell filled her nose.
She whirled around to see Bladeh yanking a smoking pan off the stove – her omelette! Confusion flooded her. She made perfect eggs. She'd never burnt an omelette, especially to that degree.
Scartail ran into the kitchen, fanning the smoke with a couple of menus. “What happened in here?!” Her gaze traveled from the pan to Tiny. “Oh, Tiny! Are you okay?”
“I'm – ” she began, but Scartail grabbed the supplies out of her hands before she could finish.
“You must be exhausted. We've all heard about Fireheart, you know. How much sleep have you gotten? And then you've been here working all morning!” Tiny opened her mouth to answer, but the waitress was untying her apron for her and pushing her out of the kitchen. “You should really go home and get some rest! We can handle it. We'll call Dust to help.”
“Wait, hold on, I – “
The door to the cafe shut with a clink in her face.
“Oh.”
Tiny stood there for a moment in disbelief. She didn't want to go home! And she had not burned that omelette. Her face flushing red with anger, she headed for the town square, and flopped down into the grass.
“Hey, Tiny, what's up?” Lavender asked, bending down to look into her face. “I thought you were working today. I saw you when I came to get a bagel.”
“Scartail kicked me out,” Tiny said, and then explained what had happened.
“That must've burned,” Lav said, wiggling her eyebrows. Tiny stared at her. “You're right, that was weak. Okay, here's a better one. Was there too much egg-citement to handle?”
Tiny smiled briefly, and considered telling her about the scratches, but thought better of it. She'd probably think she was crazy. “Hey, Lav, do you want to come to my house? I could really go for some frozen hot chocolate.”
***
Lavender was now perched on Tiny's couch, cuddling her big baby of a cat. The movie's main menu song kept replaying as Tiny gathered the ingredients for her hot chocolate. Cocoa, sugar, milk, and ice were already sitting on the counter, and she reached on her tiptoes for the blender she had, for some reason, decided to keep in the highest shelf. As her fingers connected with the blender, an old coffee mug slid out of the cabinet and shot directly at her face.
Tiny yelped and leapt out of the way, watching the mug shatter on the floor. Her heart was racing. She'd kept that mug in the very back of the cabinet because it was ugly and chipped. Even if it had fallen, it came at her so fast.
Lavender appeared in the doorway, Tucker in her arms. “Tiny, what happened?”
“The mug – it – it fell out of the back of the cabinet somehow,” she responded, her eyes wide. Lav raised an eyebrow.
“Are you sure you didn't knock it down? Here.” She put down the cat and handed Tiny the broom. “I guess Scartail was right when she said you were tired!”
Tiny began sweeping up the pieces of porcelain, but had a sinking feeling that what had been happening had nothing to do with tiredness at all.
“Oh, hey!” Lavender commented after the chirp of her phone. She paused in her blending. “I just got a group text from Lightning. He's throwing a party at the lake tomorrow night to celebrate everyone getting settled in Wish Village.” After she spoke, Tiny's own phone went off in her pocket. She grimaced at the vibration on her scratches. Lavender started the blender again, and yelled over the noise, “ARE YOU GOING?”
“PROBABLY NOT,” Tiny shouted back. “I DON'T REALLY DO WELL WITH PARTIES.”
“YEAH, I UNDERstand.” Lav turned off the blender and peered inside. “This looks good. It smells good too.”
The pair got settled on the couch, cat purring between them, with frosty glasses of frozen hot chocolate. Tiny started the movie, hoping to forget the day's weird events and Fireheart's disappearance for a bit, but she couldn't shake the feeling that something was very wrong in Wish.

Wishian. chapter five .blood cw“ Sunset was beginning to fall across Wish Village, turning the buildings shades of red and gold. Lavender adjusted her newsboy cap and looked over the edge of the cliff the town was situated on; past the Skyrock Trail, the beach glittered orange, and the water of the Moon Lake was a deep silver despite the time of day. Lightning and a few others were already gathered on the beach near the pointed tip of the lake on the far side of the valley.
She carefully began picking her way down the trail; it was wide, sure, but she still had a vision of just falling off in a strong wind every time she looked down. By the time she reached the bottom, long blue shadows were being cast across the valley. Strings of lights were hung across the few trees along the outer rim of the beach and lanterns were set on the ground. “Hey, Lightning!” Lavender called, pushing her blonde hair back. The boy almost tumbled off his perch on a plastic crate.
“Oh, hey, Lav!” he said over his shoulder. She sat on the edge of a cooler and looked around.
“This is looking really good! Hey, do you have any non-alcoholic beverages?”
“You're sitting on them,” he replied, and hopped down from the stool, brushing off dust from his hands. “And thanks. I meant this just as a moving-in party, but…it's also kind of turned into a distraction from Fireheart.” He frowned and tugged at a stray lock of hair.
“Yeah,” Lavender said, suddenly melancholy. A strange atmosphere had fallen over the village since Fireheart had disappeared. Darkstar and the whole police force looked distressed and tired whenever they were spotted, which had only been once or twice. And Tiny hadn't been seen at all since Lavender spent time at her house, and she wasn't answering texts or phone calls. She couldn't really blame her.
Pushing the thought from her mind, she stood and opened a can of Dr Pepper. Others were filtering down the trail or already heading across the beach to join them; she watched moss cross to Jingle and smile at her, and spotted Scary and Heat walking close together, their voices obviously hushed. Splashy and Holly were there too, looking slightly subdued, followed by Meadow, Jilda, and Dust. It seemed like almost the whole town was coming.
“Hi, Dust,” Lavender said as the girl approached, tugging on her black top.
“Hello,” she responded with a faint smile. “How are you?”
“I'm okay. You?”
“A little shaken up, but fine, I suppose.” Dust patted her shoulder lightly and headed to the makeshift bar.
The party picked up quickly. Somebody put on a playlist with way too much bass, and some members seemed to enjoy drinking more than usual. A few pulled the broken limbs from the copse of trees nearby onto the beach and started a bonfire. Lav wasn't sure how to feel about that, but it seemed like everybody else was having fun.
She looked into the crackling orange flames and thought about Fireheart. Her disappearance had shaken the town and shaken her personally; she enjoyed the member's presence and it wasn't right, waiting around for her to return. One of the limbs popped and sent sparks into the air, and she finally broke her stare into the fire and looked around. Darkstar had showed up, and the police were gathered close to him, speaking quietly, while trying not to look like they were doing much of anything. Pine kept clicking her fingernails on a bottle, as if to cover up their speech. Closer to the water, moss watched them with a frown on their face.
Lavender stepped away from the sweltering torridity of the bonfire and began walking across the beach. She sighed in relief. She loved all her friends and hanging out with them, but she appreciated the cooler air and the quiet as the sounds of music and laughter faded away. Judging by the crowd, another member or two had had the same thought.
The blonde girl sipped at her soda and looked up at the sky. It was beautiful out here, in comparison to their old city – one could see all the stars out here. She wondered, briefly, if Warriors had been right, and each star represented someone that had died. Her gaze passed back over the dark, silvery waters, and for a second she thought she saw a flicker of something blue at the dock on the other side of the lake, a flash of movement, a ripple on the water. But then she blinked, and it was gone.
“Lav!”
She turned, the quiet disturbed, and pushed down her irritation. It was Dust, who looked much more gleeful and inebriated than she had before. Her face was pink and shining. “Hello, Lavender! What are you doing over here?”
“Just…nothing,” she sighed finally.
“You should come have fun with us,” Dust insisted, then giggled. “Except Jilda's not having fun.Her dress caught on fire a little.”
“God, is she okay?”
“Yeah, she's fine. Now come on! I can't think of a pun to convince you.”
“Me either,” Lavender mumbled, and let herself be led back to the party, but her mind was somewhere far away.
***
Lavender was spending the morning away from people.
The party had been kind of exhausting. Drunk people and loud music and a fire was a great way to induce some anxiety, and not much later she'd walked Dust home and gone to sleep it off herself. Now, she'd eaten a lovely breakfast and put on her favorite hat and was out walking around Wish Village.
First, she'd walked around the perimeter of the town. The Town Hall looked sad and quiet; all the people inside were probably preoccupied with looking for Fireheart. In contrast, the giant Ww symbol on the ground of the square was glimmering a beautiful shade of gold in the pale yellow sunshine. She continued on, passing by homes less often, and ended up next to the Morning Forest. It usually seemed warm and inviting, but something was different today, as if the light that filtered between the trees turned cold. It seemed quiet in there. She couldn't see any movement or hear rustling between the angry knots of briars close to the forest floor, and suppressing a sudden shiver, she turned and walked away.
Lavender figured she might as well head back down to the Moon Lake and assess the damage from the previous night. She cut through the street and passed by the homes of Jingle and moss. One of the unicorns gave her a curious whinny. She patted its nose and wished she had a couple carrots. Maybe she'd stop by the market on the way home.
She was more certain in her steps down the Skyrock Trail in the bright light, and quickly reached the bottom. The lights were still hanging from the trees, and several cans were scattered around in the sand. Lavender rolled her eyes and sighed. “This is ridiculous,” she said to herself, drawing out the 's' for emphasis.
She picked her way across the somewhat trashed beach and looked for something to put the cans in, but her eyes focused on something floating in the water further away. Lavender squinted. Had somebody thrown a trash bag into the water? As.sholes. It did seem out of character for a Wishian, though, so she headed towards it.
As she approached, her throat began to feel tight with anxiety. Something was wrong with this scene. She realized that this was not a weird trash bag at all, and her breath caught in her lungs. Without thinking, she waded into the water.
A familiar tanned arm floated out toward Lavender, and she began to wish that she'd never come out here this morning. A deep blue dress, soaked almost black, rippled in the water. Frightened tears spilled over Lav's cheeks, blurring her vision as she pushed waist-deep into the lake.
Her hand shaking, she grasped the arm and pulled the person toward her. The limb was cold, stiff, all wrong. She steeled herself, grabbed the body by the waist, and flipped it over.
“Oh god,” she choked out, halfway between a scream and a sob. She heard a ringing in her ears.
Black hair spilled over the girl's cheek like a soft curtain. Her mouth was parted, like she was about to speak, cold and blue. Her neck – oh, her neck, her throat. It was torn wide open, like claws slicing through butter, and blood, the blood, the water cloudy and red. Lavender couldn't breathe, couldn't think.
The worst was her eyes.
They were open wide. Water droplets hung like crystals in her eyelashes. Her eyes stared, surprised but empty, into the clear blue sky. The sky that mocked her death.
“Oh, Splashy,” Lavender whimpered, holding the body to her chest and forgetting, for a moment, that her friend was soaked in blood. “Splashy, oh god, I'm so sorry.”
